Yes
While in Florida for Christmas, I spent a few nights having a go at sunsets. One night I accidently left the flash on and got a nice effect. I decded to do some experiments, I took these two shots, one with the flash bouncing off the ground at my feet, the other without flash. I can't decide which is best...What do we think? As it was an experiment, I have done not other processing other tan to covert the RAW as was.

No, not at all.
Simply, due to the placement of the on-board flash (right next to the lens), it makes the shadows and light seem really harsh, and hardly flattering. Using a TTL cord and off camera flash gun, you can get some really nice effects. Just down to careful consideration of flashgun placement.

I think the shot could work but the flash is way overpowering the scene, you don't want to light the entire foreground just add a bit of detail.

I would say back the flash down 2-3 stops so it just adds a bit of detail into the foreground. You'll ideally want quite a soft light too to avoid harsh shadows.

Thanks, for the tips. It came about by accident when I took some shots of my youngest todlling round. I noticed that the sky kept its redness while the forground was lit up. I decided on this little trial as I wasn't sure how best to use it. More pointers for the little black book.
