Sunni's 52 for 2010 - Week 5, Speed!

Excellent use of props to get the lighting effect underneath, and great you're learning stuff too. Firing a flash through household objects can be surprisingly enlightening :)

Only crit is it looks a bit too yellow, and it's making me wish I'd got a Pineapple to eat, damn you! :)

Hi Sunni. Loving your week 2 image, very in keeping with the Lord of the Rings theme from week 1. The dark tower with the eye of Sauron watching. Very imposing shot with good angle and treatment.

Week 3 - Don't recall any pineapples in LotR :D But am liking the shot. Like the way the light is coming up through the chair but a bit disappointed the fruit seems a little dark.

Looking forward to more.

I love the Dark Tower - fantastic effect!:clap:

The pineapple shot has worked rather well - using the chair seat with the holes is nicely different from the more usual set up. Maybe you could just lift the brightness of the chopped bits with a curve and masking?

Speedlights can be frustrating but great fun!

   The light coming through the chair has worked really well on this!

Not sure that the chopped pineapple is quite right though. Could maybe have done with another light source to pick out more detail in it and the colour looks a bit off

I still think it's a great interpretation though and the lighting effect from the chair is brilliant. Sounds like you had lots of fun experimenting this week too.

Hi Sunni, enjoying your thread so far, and am stumped to figure out where my previous comment went because I could have sworn I'd commented already. Anyway...

Your opener was a great shot in my opinion. I like well taken high key images, and this was done so much better than your average Venture shot.

The contrasting darkness of the Dark Tower shows that you have the range to shoot different subjects equally well without falling into a "rut" of similar processing styles. Both week 1 & 2 were markedly different for me.

Chopped doesn't really work for me, but I think that's more down to me. You've clearly made the effort to take the shot considering lighting and backgrounds - two of the things I'm first to forget about, so I appreciate the effort gone into it. Maybe a bit of contrast, or B&W to hightlight the texture of the pineapple shell might work. That under-chair lighting is very effective, but (i feel) overpowered by the brightly illuminated fruit.

All in my humble opinion of course!!

Ian.

Hi everyone, and thank you for your lovely and constructive comments! I think the pineapple picture has a long way to go before being good, and a re-shoot is in order at some point. Still lifes are a lot harder than I thought!

Now I have to admit to cheating on this next picture... I just haven't had the time to go out to shoot anything, and I know I won't over the weekend either, so to not get too far behind I'm posting a shot from November.

The look on his face is from watching 5 photographers standing around a pair of shoes left in a puddle on the pavement, shooting away like madmen

I loved this shot when you first posted it Sunni and I still do. The look on the guy's face is priceless and I still think there's there's something very John Lydon-ish about him.

He looks utterly bemused . This is cracking photo Sunni great use of DOF and if it wasn't for the texture in his hair you could easily mistake for a Beret ...

....great street shot.

I think this is a grand shot!

I like the way you've framed the subject, and the DoF works very nicely. Yo've got an interesting subject too, with the hair, and the ears. The expressions works marvellously.

Corker!

Ian.

Brill shot with an excellent DOF, the B&W processing works a treat.

Might not be shot for the week, but it's still a great image. Well done.

Looking forward to the reshoot of the pinaple, there is not enough detail in the chopped pieces for me.

The street shot is very good, it's one of those that has a timeless feel as you would be hard pressed to tell if it was taken yesterday, last year or 10 years ago.

Thank you everyone for your comments!

I've again been too busy to shoot something specifically for the theme, so I'm cheating and using a shot I did for the monthly competition - high speed waterdrops. I'm wanting to do the same using ferrofluid and magnets, but just haven't had the time yet! Once I do I'll update with a picture.

And I promise I'll stop cheating at some point after the next few weeks, once I've finally got my weekends back. I made the mistake of offering free photo shoots on my blog, and it got a somewhat larger response than I expected! I should be back to normal by March, so not long now..

I love the reflection and ripples in this shot. Nice to see a more top down angle for a change. I'm sure you'd rather be busy than have too much time on your hands so I'm sure we'll forgive you, although where is week 6? ;)

Well cheat or not I really like that Sunni.
The B&W makes it a little different to the usual brightly coloured droplets.

I'm wanting to do the same using ferrofluid and magnets, but just haven't had the time yet! Once I do I'll update with a picture.

And that sounds really interesting. I'd love to see that.

I really like that, the ripples and reflections really make it for me.

I love the street shot, the look on that guys face is just priceless. It just screams "what the hell". DoF is excellent on it and it really suits the black and white processing.

The speed shot isn't quite doing it for me in black and white though, I quite like to see these with a dab of colour and for me it looks a bit washed out in black and white. I like the idea, but not quite the finished result. What was the colour version like?

Nice water droplet! Any chance of catching up on the missing weeks?

Lee, I'm hoping to this weekend! Have the 'people' shot but needs processing, and then 'present' is ready I just need to take the shot... ummm what's after that - mechanical? Will have to think about what to do for that one
