Some of you know that my better half sorta dabbles in photography, not much, just picking stuff up as he goes along, kind of thing.

Anyway, we were in Clintons today and he came across the hallowe'en section (he'd have everyone in fancy dress at the wedding if it was upto him!) and there were some black light bulbs. (£2 each BTW)

I've never ever seen them before. What I was wondering  is could it work making interesting effects, if they're in lamps on the background or subject, in a photo?

Just wondering if anyone has used them before? I've never seen them before TBH. I'll post results though, but we did get 2 just for the sole purpose of playing with them with the camera.

If its the ones I am thinking of - they glow a kinda purple and make anything white 'glow' fairly bright. They are used a lot in nightclubs - you can get special makeup and clothes that glow neon under them!

Edit: here ya go: Bulb:

OO - and it is what they use to check bank notes and driving licenses! Have a look when you got it all set up!

And I am really looking forward to seeing some shots with it!

oooooo that's kinda whacky! I kinda like it!

they don't look purple though, literally jet black (my simple mind says that the physics is all wrong, despite the fact that I know it's obviously going to have a cool effect....hopefully...or maybe the physics being all wrong is what gives the cool effect?)

with a longer exposure they will look purple, the light is UV and mostly outside the visible spectrum but the lower frequency end of the light is visible but there isn't much of it

the glowing is the light having its frequency shifted when it bounces off stuff (e.g nice reflective white t shirts)
