Avoid like the plague the 3 combination TSA locks, too easy to open in less than a couple of minutes without knowing the combination or having a key.

Security locks like this just arn't worth even looking at and I am no locksmith but fathomed out how to open in minutes. The is no damage to the lock or even shown it has been undone,so as I say avoid this type of lock.

All most suitcase locks can do is stop (or at least slow down) the opportunist if he/she tries opening the catch or zip. A pack of little cable ties will be as effective for this as most locks.

I've got some peli tsa locks, I know they'll take all of 2 seconds to defeat with some snips. More to stop the bags flying open mid transit and the casual pickpocket type theft.

Moral of the story, nothing worth stealing goes out of site.

theres nothing of value in my cases i take it with me. the number of times i have been called to unlock it so it can be checked i don't bother locking it now

Nod
Cable ties arn't the answer as customs may want to look inside a suit case. TSA padlocks are used as custom officers have a key for them and don't need to know any combination

surely they have scissors..

also the TSA (as far as i know) are an American Gov Dept. depends where you are traveling to i guess.

e: although there is some (unconfirmed) suggestion that UK customs can open TSA locks.

For cable ties.

Bonus is that you can see instantly if it has been opened. :D

Locks don't offer any protection against thieves unless you're using a hard shell case, and they usually have their own. A few seconds with a blade will open just about any soft bag. Don't put anything valuable in check in luggage.
