Hi guys,

I am in the fortunate position that I have a buyer for my 550D which means that I can upgrade my system.

I will have about £2000 to spend after selling my camera and a few other items, I currently have a 24-105 L lens, a 50 1.8, a 270 EX, will get a 430 EX II.

I like to photograph landscapes, seascapes, portraits and the kids/family.

Any ideas? Initially thought a 7D but hear that it is pretty similar in IQ to the 550D.

Cheers Mani

Canon 5D mkIII would be my choice :) but i recon from a recent magazine rummor that Canon could be about to release a replacement for the 60D/7D maybe even a combined efort like a 70D/7DmkII in that case i would try to hold off buying one just now but then again there are some good deals for 7D's or 5D mkII's.

Hi Mani,

I have a 7D having upgraded from a 400D last year and I would recommend it! You may also want to consider a wider lens, maybe the Canon 10-22 or Sigma 10-20 for your landscapes and seascapes? From somewhere like HDEW I think it'd cost about £1400-1500.

I would love to get a 5D iii but it is just out of my budget at the moment. Was leaning to a 5D ii or 7D with a 70-200 2.8 mark ii.

You don't use any long lenses so with that sort of money I think a full frame camera like the 5Dmk2 would be the most suited. You loose the crop factor so lenses won't be as long but you gain quality and much better ISO performance.

I think this is what I will buy once I get the money from the sale, still seems a good camera even though it has been replaced. 7D is just to similar to the 550D, although the auto focus seems to be streets ahead of the 5D.

I don't really see the point in getting a 7d unless you want the improved AF as the IQ won't improve, it's spending for the sake of it.

That said, if your family shots are often if the action variety then pairing a 7d with the 70-200 could be interesting.

Personally, I'd either go for a 5d2 now, maybe with a 70-200 f4 non is for portraits or a high quality wide angle for the landscapes unless you can resist the urge to buy and wait for a 5d3.

Does all that make sense ???

The 7D really is spending for the sake of it, I really would wait for the 7D mk2 announcement before deciding (if it was me).

Thanks for the advice guys, and this does make sense. I would love to get a 5D iii but just cannot justify it, it's £2600 and a 5D ii can be purchased used for around £1100, which seems to be the going rate. I could spend the extra on a lens. I'm not sure how I could get a 5D iii passed the Mrs, most reviews seem to suggest it is not a great different in IQ to the 5D ii.

Why not for a used 1D model, either a 1D3 if you want a 1.3x crop or maybe a 1DsII.... both seem to be between £1200-£1350 depending on 'mileage' and conditions at somewhere like MPB

A bit too big and bulky for me I'm afraid.

I've got agree with the above views, I went from a 40D to 5D3...or at least I will when my bonus comes through...lol
I've been weighing up the advantages of the 7D or the 60D...fo a while...and it took abit of bargaining, but managed to get the 'ok' from my other half for the 5D3...

I agree with some of the previous posts.

I have had both the 7D & 5DMKII. The 7D is a great body, however it is a crop sensor. The focusing system is better on the 7D, however this won't be a problem if you are shooting mostly landscapes and portraits. If you was shooting sports for example then it may make a difference. You also get a bit closer to the action with the crop sensor.

The 5DMKII is Full Frame and will give you superior image quality, and you will get less noise in low light situations using a higher ISO. Most Pro's have a 5D of some sort in their kit bag.

I had the 7D and after few weeks wanted Full Frame. Decent used 5DMKII's are going for around £1k and even less now.

Understand you not wanting to go for the MKIII, it's a huge difference in price.

5D MKII at around £1300 ish new from one of the importers is a hell of a Camera. I think you would be very happy with the images coupled with the 24/105 L you already have (that's the set up I use most of the time).

If you want to take it easy you could pick up a bargain 5D, which probably has better IQ to the 7D (The AF and build are clearly inferior though). The best compromise short of getting 5DIII is the brick called 1Ds II with accurate AF and brilliant IQ.
Don't waste the extra on 430 II, pick up a nice cheap used 430EX for a fraction of cost (or save up for the new ones)

Too late, I bought the 430 ii, I keep changing my mind, had settled for a 5D iii, but it is way too much money, as I am only a hobbyist I cannot justify it to myself. I do think the flash is great, even on my 550d with a 24-105L.
