Hi all, I've had a look at various websites.. speedlightsdotnet etc etc.. in the hope of trying to settle on my first hot shoe flash.. I now have a good idea of the features id like, but im still no closer to selecting a model.. and the choice of models is starting to melt my newbie mind T_T some suggestions/pointers would be very, very much appreciated.

im mainly looking to use the flash with my canon 550d, and likely a nifty fifty.. to do indoor/outdoor portrait shots (people, interesting objects, family gatherings etc), with the flash on and off the camera. e-ttl would be nice to make sure i get things exposed correctly, and swivel/tilt = a must as im hoping to bounce light off a few things. my budget would stretch up to about £70-£100max.. so the canon ones are out of the question lol.. the current ones im looking at are

jessops 360afd,
YongNuo YN-468 e-TTL,
Nissin Di-622 Mark II

it would be nice to have the wireless ttl that the nissin has.. and the ettl again to get my exposure right. another thing my head cant hack right now is what 'flash output' would do the job for me.. ive had a google to try understand these figures a bit more with little success.. perhaps due to the rather late time im writing this..

ANYYYY help, pointers or suggestions would be very much appreciated as i really want to get cracking :P

thanks in advance,

Pete :)

in my opinion

functionality.... nissin > YN > jessops
value for money YN rules the roost... but they can have QC problems.

For £100, the Nissin.

two for the nissin.. any other suggestions as to the above or alternate models/ suggestions. i could go 2nd hand S:

I picked up a metz 48 1af-1 seconed hand for £90. Its better build quality than my 430 exII

thanks for that @adamus, will check it out. please keep coming with any suggestions or advice on suitable flashes!

many thanks,

Pete

I would also second the nissin or a used 430 ex, it all depends on what you want to do later. If you intend adding remember that to use wireless ttl your next must have the same make so they are compatable.
I use a black foam thingy, it works great at stopping light filling the front.
This was one I bounced off a wall and ceiling

(sorry about taking you out from here I couldn't get the picture to link)

You obviously need system compatability, but one brand of flash will work fine with another - eg Canon with Nissin with Metz.

I picked up a used Sigma 530 DG Super for about £90 a while ago. Make sure its the super though as the standard is no good at all.

For £100, the Nissin.

:agree:

If not the Nissin then the Jessops one. It's not that there's anything particularly wrong with the YongNuo flashguns, it's more down to the type of retailer you have to buy them from. Any problems with the Nissin or Jessops units then you take them back to the shop, with the YongNuo it'll at best be a Uk online seller and at worst mean shipping the flash back to HK, negating any "savings".

Good question Pete..I've got a same dilemma Jessops or Nissin???

If I decide to go with Nissin which shop can I buy it from for any after-sale issues?? Apprently Jessops dont have them??

Thanks.
