Suggestions on lighting.

Hey everyone :)

Ok so a few threads in, I think its time to get some details in one place to help me get somewhere ^_^

Now the main place im shooting is the kitchen, as its one of the only rooms in the house with a wall with nothing on. (The colour of the wall is similar to plaster)

If I was facing the wall taking a photo...

(1) Approximately 6ft up to the left is cupboard
(2) A window on the right (5ft x 10ft approx)
(3) Fluorescent tube directly above (White ceiling)

Now I've got a SB600 attached to my D50, what im looking for is suggestions to get some creative lighting using just regular household items. Now I've heard people mentioning reflective paper, tissue paper, sweet wrappers etc but im not sure on the application of each of these things...

Just some general guidelines would be fantastic! Remember im a complete newb to all this and very restricted budget. This is meant to be a bit of fun in my spare time so not really interested in full lighting rigs etc :)

Hey sorry :P

Mainly interested in practicing some shots of my Girlfriend/2 kids etc, nothing special although I don't want your standard white background effect that's so common now. I would prefer something with a bit of "grit" bit of "attitude"

My budget consists of a few pence... :p trying to keep price down

Question - What do people recommend? I so often here bits of coloured foil being used or other household items to create different lighting techniques. Using regular household items what do people use?

Try natural light from the window. Pick the right time of day. You can also use diffusers (e.g. net curtain) in front of the window.

Use white card or tin foil as a reflector for fill light.

How old are your kids - this idea might be OK for an adult but my experience is that kids will not sit still while you get all this sorted.
