...currently using a canon 5d MkII with 24-105mm

Would really like to rent a wide angle lens to test it out on larger group shots.

Any suggestions on what is a winner?!

Also I'd anyone has any images they could post?

Much appreciated (so untechnical) ;0)

Unless you want esoteric and very costly you're limited on choice:

  • 17-40 if you don't need the extra stop the 16-35 has (there is very little in it for image quality).
  • 14mm Samyang - fixed focal length and manual focus, but very good for the price
  • Sigma 12-24: not as good as the 17-40, but goes to 12mm which is crazy wide....

Do you think I should consider a prime? I just think sometimes you come unstuck with them if you're in a small area

If the prime was mid range or telephoto, I'd have said yes, but not for wide-angle.

17-40 F4L is a good choice, Sigma 12-24mm is another option, but exceedingly wide on a FF body.

Another vote for the 17-40.

Yes, the 16-35 gives you f2.8 but that comes at a very high price.

I wouldn't personally go for a Prime at this focal length but it is very much that, a personal choice.

It's annoying that there isn't a Sigma/Tamron alternative to the 16-35 f/2.8. As lovely as the Canon is, it's too rich for my tastes!

Wicked, thanks everyone. You've helped loads.
Birthday next week so 17-40 is going on the list.

Not a brilliant shot but taken with a 17-40 on a 5DmK2
I think the exif data is intact but its at 19mm
