hi, I'm new here and new to photography. I would like a Entry-level camera to start landscape photography. any recommendations? how about Canon 450d? thank you all!

Certainly does a good job for my landscape shots.....if thats the main thing you want to do with the camera then it is worth getting a number of filters as well.

Thank you Blue, but frankly speaking, I'm totally new in photography, so i think filters are more complicated for me.

There are many many people here who are more than happy to help!

I got this camera as a starter last december. I got it with the 18-55 IS kit lens and it was great. Haven't looked back since.

After about a year of using it I've grown more confident and am looking to upgrade to a 40D in the fairly near future.

So yes, I would definitely recommend the 450D as an entry level DSLR. The kit lens will be excellent for landscapes until you discover the limitations, at which point you could buy a new lens :-)

The 450 will do most of what the big boys will do so would be ideal for a beginner. It's all down to technique and mostly the lens. If you have a few £££ to spend then get a decent wide angle lens for landscapes. Also if/when you use the 18-55mm IS lens on a tripod (needed for landscape) remember to turn the IS off on the lens.

Good luck, you're gonna have fun!

The camera is a great entry level camera, I have the 400D and it is doing everything I need it to do to learn.
Get it with the kit lens as mentioned and start to use the camera, then once you find out a bit more and what sorts of pics you like to take then buy a lens that suits that purpose better.

Welcome to TP and ask loads of questions and they will be answered, post pics and people will tell you how to improve

Hi, i've have the canon 1000d which is a step down from the 450 , i'm very happy with mine so the 450 will a more than enough as a first dslr, have you also looked at other brands like nikon or sony plenty of choice.Oh and welcome to TP .

Thank you Motogp, I'm also thinking of Nikon N40 and N60,but it's said that the lens wil be limited for future upgrade.?

Hi lareneg, thank you for sharing your experience with 450. so I think 18-55 IS kit lens will be right and enough for my level.

I made a similar post here a few weeks ago and went for the 450d. It's a great little camera with the kit lens.

Recommended

Oh, and welcome :)

450 d great camera has taught me and still loads more to learn.
Ask questions, observe posts and come and join us on the 2010 52 week challenge.

Good Luck.

My only advice would be to not fixate on a particular brand/model just yet. Remember reviews and other peoples comments are always a personal preference.

Have you actually held the camera to see if it is comfortable and you like the layout of buttons/dials.

I've known many people who say they want one camera yet when they go and play with them buy another.

If the HK in your user profile stands for Hong Kong then, you are in an ideal place to visit shops and play.

Thank you Andy,
I quite agree you that it is mostly about the technique and lens. and I would like to make 450D kit as a first dslr. but a decent wide angle lens will go beyond my budget.:D

I would say that after you have used and grown confident in using the 450d don't just rush out and get a 50d or whatever. Borrow a really decent lens like Canons 'L' series and you will see that the 450d is capable of remarkably good quality images with a decent lens attached. Also Post production software can make a big difference turning an ok image into a wow image. The Gimp is free and Photoshop elements is very cheap for what it can do.

I have the Panasonic Lumix GF1 which is strictly not a DSLR but i'm constantly amazed at what it can do in the right hands. I have had a 450d and 40d and there wasn't a huge difference. The 450d is a great camera.

I have a 450D with Canon's EF-S 10-22 mm wide angle lens. You can get some fantastic landscape shots with this lens although it's decidedly pricey. As the others have suggested, start off with the 18-55mm kit lens and then see how far you want to go from there.

Good luck!

thank you PsiFox,
Actually I'd searched on the website and some models come into my mind as my first dslr camera like D40,450D and 500D. I know a little about camera, so I trust most in Nikon and Connon so far. And I consider 450D as my first dslr camera because it's better for upgrade than D40 and less expensive than 500D. I'm sure the shop staff will tell me clearly what features does those cameras have and how well they will perform. But I think I need to know how the people really feel this camera(or other) before going to the shop to play with them.
