Suggestions for new car ?

I agree but that's what makes them good value for an 18mth or 2yr old one. I don't think I will ever buy another brand new car again - I couldn't face the depreciation as you drive off the forecourt

This is true, I couldn't believe how little a 2 year old 9-5 diesel estate with leather was, it is very tempting

Try a VW Passat, I have a 170bhp Sport estate with DSG and really like it :)
It's a quick, comfortable, capable car with plenty of room and decent MPG.

Got my SAAB 9-3 TTiD Aero, one year old and 8000 miles on the clock at a fraction of the buy new price. Love it. Love leather. Love drive comfort, performance and economy. Howevere, each to his own which is just as well or we would all buy the same thing and like the same women!

You can get a brand new top spec Alfa Mito for a shade under 18k, you won't get more passionate than an Italian lump :p I don't think servicing would be that dear, you get the bonus of having a warranty, and they look pretty smart and go like stink (apparently).

If I had 18k I'd be buying one! Well. No, I'd be buying an older Alfa and spending a good 2 or 3k on new gear

You do know the Mito is just a Fiat Punto in a party frock, don't you? ;)

I have no idea about Italian cars......;).....I just felt argumentative for a nanosecond.....

I've heard that timing chains fall off the ford TDCI engines for fun.......

Not just fords !!!!!!!!!! ,i've spun a spanner or two ,just let me say ,it's quite shocking what goes wrong mechanically ,from low dollar to high dollar cars these days

I have a Golf and cannot fault it, the DSG gearbox is a joy and it does everything I need it to, never had a moments bother with it and they hold their value really well too.

Worth a look for sure.

Current vehicle 2001 BMW 520i SE Auto, which I've had from new. I really like the blend of solidity & ride comfort but on the odd occasion if I want to push on it can handle the twisty bits easily. It's also good at motorway munching for longer trips. I'm thinking I may be looking at a diesel to improve fuel economy and also I would like a little more low end torque - so nothing really revvy please.

I also don't want to spend a fortune on servicing, maintenance, tax etc or low mpg but still with a dash of style.

I'm thinking that the sensible option might be a new shape 5 series diesel but to be honest the interior doesn't really do it for me compared to the current car (and the exterior isn't that good looking IMHO).

So over to you guys for suggestions please - oh and BTW budget up to £18k but can be pre-owned

This car seems to tick most of your boxes.

Alfa 159 weasel would definately be on my list and ridiculously, the estate is an even better looking lump than the saloon. However, its an Alfa and your requirment for low service/repair costs might not necessarily be suited  As the Mito >> :gag::gag: horrible piece of dross that should never have been given an alfa badge, as flash says, Punto in a party frock!

Mondeo - my bro-in-law got one as a company car and rates it very highly, and its not bad looking either, but depreciation might be an issue, though if you going s/h anyway, less of a consideration.

Never heard that one. Injectors sometimes, but never heard of any trouble from timing chains.

Snap, wonder if he mean's the timing belts on the old TDDI as oposed to the TDCI, the belts wher prone on those, but the chain on the TDCi is pretty strong.

Other thing the TDCI suffered from was the DualMass fly wheels, other then that there pretty solid. My mate has had more trouble with his BMW X5 that he brought from new then any-one i know with Mondeo MK3 or MK4, both of which are supplied on the company car programe at work if your eligable for a car. I am not so stuck with a company VX Astra Van, but do own a Mondeo MK3, that i choose over a BMW 3series as i prefered the spec and driving position.

Injectors are a big problem on the TDCi as well

I had a Mondeo, great car but i'll never buy another, it was 9 months old and I thought i'd nicked it, 12k for a 12,000 mile ST200 9k off new price.

I had it 18 months and couldn't get £6000 for it, never again
