I'm after a tripod for travelling with my X100. it needs to be sturdy enough to take the weight ~500g but small enough to be carried in a small satchel easily enough. Any suggestions?

I have a Canon G12 which I use for holidays and generally shove in a bag when I'm out and about but not planning to take any pictures. I also carry with it a Tamrac Zipshot tripod, extremely portable and surprisingly effective. I've got night time shots that I couldn't otherwise have got without it. Now there is no way it replaces either of my other two supports, it certainly can't be used if it's windy, but for the @ £20 I paid it's been worth the cost. I always say I wouldn't put anything heavier than the G12 on it, but as your camera is only @ 100g more that wouldn't be a problem. It's a little low at 44ins, but not a problem with a fold out screen, and I only use it with the self timer. Doubles as a flash stand too! http://www.tamrac.com/products/zipshot/

Depends how small you want it collapsed & how much you want to pay. I have the Hama Traveller compact pro. Its about 52cm closed down with the head and 45cm without it (easy to remove), it has a max height of 163cm. I use it with my OMD and find it reasonably sturdy and theres a hook to hang your bag for added stability. Its about £30 on amazon.

I've got one of these but the ball head broke within the hours of getting it home. I shouldn't have bought it because the display model was also broken in the same way. I wrongly assumed that it had been abused what with it being the display model. I don't know if mine was just part of a poor batch. Either way I have been very disappointed by it.

Shame, I have had mine over six months with regular use and no probs.

I'm after something smaller really. Say no more than 30cm closed, I'm not bothered about height just something to aid me in getting nighttime long exposures.

Thanks,

Chris

An empty beanbag. Fill it with material from the location you're at. Or two beanbags - one under the camera as a pad and the other on top as a stabiliser.

Or something small, foldable and labelled Manfrotto.

Is a Gorillapod Hybrid any good they hold upto 1KG have a ball head and level and only priced at £24 at Amazon.

worth pointing out you can get cheap arca swiss quick release clamps, and small arca swiss plates (20-25mm length) so if you find a suitable cheapo tripod with meh head, thats a option

If you're after something cheap, I'd recommend this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hama-Traveller-Compact-Pro-Tripod/dp/B002L4ODDS The ball head it excellent and it is very compact, there is also an even smaller version available if size is an issue. I love mine and it's great for when I need it, but I think it depends how regularly you use a tripod.

Edit: I bought mine of Amazon a while back (hence the link) you may find it cheaper elsewhere now!
