Yes
Was pretty sure I was going to buy the 55-250 lens to go with the kit lens that came with my 450D. But some have raised concerns about the plastic mounting. This has got me a little worried.

Have seen the Sigma and Tamron lenses have metal mounts and wondered if they would be a good alternative. If so what one do I go for?

TIA.

Don't be too worried about the plastic mount. Canon has been using this in its cheaper lenses for years and the 55-250 actually produces good results (see the Fred Miranda site for example). I use one in place of my 70-200 L lens when I am travelling as it is so much lighter and smaller. It is obviously not the same build quality of more expensive lenses, but probably can't be beaten for the money.

If your budget stretches to the 70-200mm F4 L that's my suggestion.

As above, don't worry about the plastic mount  If it really has put you off, the 70-300 IS is worth a look, a cracker of a lens, 300mm and IS. The 70-200 F4 L is then the next step up in terms of quality and price

But again, don't worry about the plastic mount and the 55-250 IS is a belter of a lens, esp for the money

First post alert Hi everyone!!!!
I have the Canon 55-250 and it's always on the camera, (450D too) I have not had any problems with the mount etc in about a year of constant use. As someone said earlier it is pretty light so great for travelling, I also have the 70-300 IS but it's a bit heavier and I can't use it without a tripod. Hope that helps a bit!

Yep me too, Ive used the 450D with 55-250 combo for ages :) works a treat, great images from it and no concerns or worries over the mount!

go for it! :)

Hi,

I have the 55-250 and have no concerns about the plastic mount either. The lens is light and i like the images i get with it.

My partner has the 70-300 USM IS and that is a much sturdier, heavier lens. No doubt due to technique as we are both beginners, but we can both take images of the same topic and the 70-300 is the one which is more likely to have camera shake if they are both being used hand held.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Tracey

If you really don't want the 55-250 as mentioned above the 70-300 is metal mount, but its £400 or so at the moment. Everything I've read say that the picture quality is comparable to the 70-300 for the average joe.

There are other Canon lenses knocking about (90-300, 75-300 etc) all of which are not rated very highly.

The Tamron and Sigma lenses are a little hit and miss - the low price ones aren't rated all that well, the more expensive ones are liked by some, but you're talking ball park of the 70-300 price.

I have a 55-250is here, had it for a year or so give or take, and it made it to kenya and back ok and took litterally hundreds of pictures whilst on safari whilst i was there so i can recommend that. Obviously if funds allow go for something further up the quality scale but i have had no regrets buying one, obviously i'd like something better but beggars can't be choosers ;).
