Hi there, I'm a very new amature photographer.

I've had my D3100 for a couple of weeks now I got it with the 18-55 VR Lens, I not hungry for more just yet of course, but still I'm wondering whether to go with a wide-angle lens or a telephoto next?

I do like to work with subjects close up but I imagine a good zoom lens would be a lot more flexible?

Would someone briefly outline the pro's and cons for both. I'm aware because of the nature of the D3100 body the lens don't come cheap, would someone also briefly tell me why this is and prehaps suggest a zoom and wide-angle len for me?

Thanks so much

Depending on what you want to do the obvious (and perfect) matches to your camera are the Nikon 55-200VR and/or the 35mm f/1.8.

When you say work with subjects close up, what do you mean? Do you mean you like to work near the subject or that you like the images to appear close up by working further away? What pics are you taking or wanting to take exactly?

Don't know where you got the idea that lenses are expensive for the D3100, is it because someone has told you you cannot use the older AF-D lenses to autofocus. Nikon's DX lens lineup if very good value for money in my opinion.

If you want to take candid photos from a distance chose either the AF-S 55-200/4-5.6 VR or the AF-S 55-300/4.5-5.6 VR and if you want some nice indoor/low light shots with blurred backgrounds chose the AF-S 35/1.8.

Thanks for the repiles, what I meant was I like to physical work near what im photographing. I like the idea of the AF-S 35/1.8 esp if it works well indoors and low light, I like to experiment so think this may be the one to go for.

I have seen some very interesting photos with the Tonkia 11-16mm lens (sorry if thats not quite accurate) are these a good quality make?

Also thanks to John for that bit of advice

I will take the AF 50 1.8D. I feel comfort even it is converted to 75mm on dx machines. As I read several reviews and found it didn't lose too much compared with the much expensive AFS 50 1.8, AF 50 1.4 and AFS 50 1.4G.

And according to my experience, a higher iso value or a flash gun will help you much more than the F1.8 aperture in room.

The AFD doesn't autofocus on the D3100 and on a crop body 50mm is too long as a general purpose lens for a lot of people.

Yep the 35mm 1.8 really does seem to rule the roost in terms of Nikon DX Primes. It really is excellent and not bad value either.
