Just been informed by the department of pensions that as I reach 80 this week I’m now entitled to a EXTRA 25p per week , thinking about investing in a new lens with my new found wealth ..
Oh Shiite just realised it’s taxable so worth about 15p

Used to get a free TV Licence, don't think they do that anymore.
Turning 73 in April, gives me an incentive for seven more years

How pointless. Am sure the admin costs for this are not worth it? £50 a year, why not just do away with it, or even pay it as a lump sum like the WFA?

Just don't spend it all at once.

Got your maths wrong I’m afraid it actually works out to a whole £13 per year . If I put it in a jar each week I’ll have £260 by the time I reach 100

Add that to the £10 /year Xmas bonus we get, it might be worth something when you get your telegram from the King

I'm in exactly the same position, 25p increase from this month, even though my 80th birthday was in July, have received 3 separate letters telling me about it:(

Their system seems to work really strangely, because I get an extra £40, per month and my wife gets an extra £15.

They have a system?

Your all making me feel young!

Thank you for that. :)

Years ago I had a chap come into the shop I was working in very cross his state pension had only gone up 86p I think he said. “I can’t even buy a new lens cap for my Bronica” he exclaimed, ignoring the fact he was in a position to buy a expensive cameras in the first place.

In all seriousness however the triple lock is not sustainable and is a bad policy but any government that tries to replace it with something sensible would get roundly beaten up for “attacking the pensioners” so here we are.

Imagine how much the pension might have gone up this year if people stopped buying big OM System lenses on the black market and smuggling them into the country avoiding paying vat!

I say all this as someone who would dearly love to retire, this afternoon, if at all possible, but will likely have to wait until I reach state pension age!

Yes, there are limits to what any government can pay out, But one bit of meaness that I think they should correct is the bounty payments made to those very few who have been awarded either the Victoria Cross or the George Cross. When the VC was first awarded the bounty was £10 a year, which was the average wage - the idea was that someone who had earned that award would get that until the day he died and would never need to work again, and the same principle applied when the GC was introduced during WW2.

They have put it up, belatedly and occasionally, but it now stands at just £10,000 per year, last updated in 2015
