do many people on here submit images to their local newspapers? i've never really thought about it, but recently i took a few shots of a newsworthy event and some people suggested sending them to the local newspaper. so i've just registered with them and i'm resizing the images to send over.

is it standard fare for the photographer to be credited if the shot is used, or is it at the publishers discretion?

Most local papers will offer to credit you instead of paying you. You wouldn't normally be credited for paid images.

...... I hope you're getting paid!

I'm not sure where you got that idea from, but creditation is given to images that a paper has bought in.

I'm not going to have a rant, but I do find it rather sad that photographers don't expect some form of payment for hard (or even soft) news images.

i'm just chuffed if someone appreciates my photographs so a credit in the local rag would be payment enough at the minute lol. monies would be nice but seeing a photo in print would be nice all the same

Papers dont appreciate anything lol, I have given up even trying to send images to the papers. Atleast one of them were honest and told me straight out we dont pay anymore because theres more than enough local people who snap away on their mobile or compact and send them in for free.

If you get your name in the paper technically you have been published but doesnt mean its a good photo. As they are more than likely looking to fill space. :bonk:

I don't usually post on this and its your choice at the end of the day but think about it, you say some day you want to make money from it , so you think giving your stuff away for free will keep the Market going so that one day you will be able to make money from this? The reason the market is collapsing is because folk give it away for free.

Btw paid or non paid you should always get a photo credit regardless and don't believe what a news desk tells you, if they want an image bad enough they will pay but they will try it on with you at the start to see if you fold.

i appreciate the input ian, you're right in saying that some day in the future i'd like to be able to make money from photography-who wouldn't. i think my problem is trying to get into that mindset, for me it's always been a passtime and money hasn't been an issue for me.

i can however see the point you are making about giving work away for free causing a decline in the market for jobbing photographers. it's a fact of life though these days unfortunately and i seem to have gotten caught in this myself. i don't think the papers will ever have a shortage of people sending pictures to their photo desks, but i won't be sending any more in to them. maybe i should stop being so hypocritical and taken steps to make some money now.
