I've just talken the battery out of my wifes car and shut the boot. Sounds OK? Well no.

You see the battery fits in the boot and the boot lock is electronic and we don't have a valet key.

So....

I can't open the boot now. I'm buggered. Spoke to a locksmith who won't touch it. Tried taking the back seats out, but just a metal bulkhead behind them. Been looking for somewhere else on the car that I can power up enough to open the boot. But to no avail.

Any ideas?

Yes I can get in to the rest of the car.

and yes, I realise it was a bit daft. But thatnks for reminding me all the same.
 
Had a quick think, if you can get in the car, you may be able to put power through the cigar lighter. Failing that you may have to find where the cabling for the servo for the boot release runs and splice the battery into it there (not sure about putting that much juice through it though :S) yoiu may also want to try this sort of thing to juice up the servo.

What car is it BTW?
 
Surely there must be some sort of alternative for when the battery is flat etc?
How would you 'get to it' then, to charge it?
 
Some cars that have concealed batteries like that actually have 2 prongs that are hiden, but accessible to attach a slave battery for long enough to release servos/locks etc. I think it's a good idea to instal such a device even if you can get to your battery easily TBH.

I'm going to ring a garage on Monday, because I'm hoping that you are right and there is a way to 'juice the car up a little' to get the boot open.

The cigar lighter! Great idea old man. I'll go and give that a go straight away.

is it manual? just wondering if it would bump start and then the alternator would power the boot release until the engine was shut down again?

TBH though, a booster pack across the alternator terminals sounds like a better idea. But, if you're not sure, don't push your luck with anything - modern car electrics are very sensitive and can very easily be burned out

Well, the plot thickens.

Sadly the cigar lighter trick didn't work. Nor did most of the other suggestions. The difference I think was that the battery wasn't flat, it was NOT there, so it sort of broke the circuit I suspect. So it wasn't quite like a flat battey, but all's wel that ends well.

can you access it through the number plate holes? (screw driver wiggled about to pop the boot mechenism?)
Vauxhall corsa's can be broken in to like this

Thick +ve lead on solenoid at Starter feeds direct to battery also earth from engine.

That should clear the problem

Unless the auxilliary leads at the +ve terminal have become seperated on removing the battery
 
Be a bit careful about putting a battery across the solenoid terminals - if the battery leads in the boot touch or the +ve lead hits the bodywork, there'll be a dead short - NOT good!


"All's well that ends well"? Did you manage in the end then? If so, how? (Just in case any of us need to do the smae!)
