Yes
So i got my first DSLR from jessops the other week, spent ages deciding what i wanted. eventually went with the Sony A290 SAM kit. In store price of £399, so whilst in store i looked up jessops on my Mobile T'internet and saw it was £349 exclusive internet price. the shop said they couldnt match there online prices. DING, i had an idea, while standing in the shop i ordered the camera on my phone to collect in store at Internet price. 1 min later the shop got my order through and that was a nice saving of £50.
Just a heads up guys, most shops are like this. I did the same for an external HDD from PC World.
hope you have some success like i have

Congrates on your purchase! Next time it would be worth spending some time online before your purchase.
Hope this won't upset you but you can save more by going through quidco or topcashback. 3% or 4% cashback off the top of my head.

no not at all, i know i coulda saved a few more quid online but i just thought it would be easier in the long run. the £50 i saved i spent on accidental cover from jessops. so if anything happens i just take it to the store rather than trying to send it back to a website. laziness on my part there. not had good experiences with the post office either

If accidental cover is what I think it is, i.e. accidental damage cover for your camera, check that you don't already have this cover under your home insurance. You should have it if you have cover for personal possessions away from the home and, if not, to add the cover for your camera should be a lot cheaper than £50.

If you do have it on your home insurance, you should have a cooling-off period of 14 days in which to cancel your Jessops cover. You will, however, need to bear in mind any excess on your home insurance and whether you would lose any no claim discount if you did make a claim, to help you make your mind up.

ive just recently claimed off my home insurance for a bathroom flood which my excess is £100. the jessops thing was £50 for 3 years. unlimited fixes and no excess.
it wouldnt really be worth it havin it on my home insurance esp at £100 a pop for excess

I had the Jessops insurance in my 40D, it was thrown in with the purchase. When my 40D had a fatal shutter failure after 15 months (and approx 40K shots) Jessops insurance eventually gave me Jessops vouchers to replace the camera (enough for a 40D) so I paid a little more and upgraded to my 50D.

However my experience with their insurance/repair company was awful. It took over 8 weeks of calling every other day before I got my vouchers. I was being told the parts were just arriving/had arrived and it would be with me in two days - for 8 weeks.

My camera is now added to my house insurance along with cover for outside the household and on holidays. Cost me an extra £50 for £10K cover.

i think once i eventually upgrade to a high end slr i will stick it on the home insurance. with mine only being £400 i just thought puttin it on my house insurance would be too costly esp if i had to get fixed more than once.

Interesting to read. I have just had my flashgun replaced under the jessops insurance. No hassle at all. Had the gun inspected for repair and vouchers sent to me in less than a week.

seems standard practice for a lot of stores.. take pc world/curries/dixon group for example, one price online another in store.

yes -its strange though, I've had stores go out and take an internet reserved item off the shelf marked at £100 and pay internet only price of £75. It can't be a storage and shops cost difference and theyre not saving any money by you ordering online and them drop shipping, see not dsure where they're saving so they can pass the savings on

Its the same for a lot of companies. Holiday companies for an example. Where I work we cannot match the online price of our holidays they have to book it online, we can even talk them through it.

I asked Jessops to do a price match for my 500d which would of ment them knocking about £50 off the cost, they wouldnt do it so lost the sale and the shop down the road gained. Its crazy, I'm a retail manager and in todays economic climate retailers have to be prepared to offer a better deal.

Hahah - that's a great story kevykat, and I hope you took delight in telling the staff exactly what you were doing!

madness.

For the record, I use Jessops insurance a while ago when an old Dynax camera I had died - quick service, no probs!

Cheers and enjoy your new toy!

Having worked as management at PCW a few years back and the fact that PCW pioneered the collect at store system, I can tell you the reason is very simple.

They advertise the goods at a reduced price on the website, either to complete with online competition or they get a scoop deal from the suppliers.

The idea is to get you into the store so they can then add on the extras. Memory Cards, Broadband (in the case of PC's), extra warranty, inks etc.

The staff are meant to pick the extras along with your order when the order comes in. So if you order a printer, the customer adviser is suppose to pick the printer, printer cable, a set of inks and some paper, then he/she is suppose to try and sell you all of that along with the printer + the additional warranty.

They make little or no money from the item you ordered at the discounted price, that is put down to cost of conversion. Hence the reluctance to offer you the web price if they feel they are not going to sell any add-ons.

Great idea, when I bought my D300 it was the same story, but I had to go home and order it and then go back and collect :bang::lol:

Any reason you went for the A290 over the A450, the A450 has a higher spec and is also cheaper.

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/645370/SONY-DSLRA450L.CEH

Was £299 a few weeks ago but is still a cheaper price even now.

yikes, surely thats a mistake. the same camera is £649 at jessops.

Anyone know jessops returns policy?i bought my camera on the 7th, i may just take my A290 back for a refund and get this from comet, if i just said i didnt like it would they give me a refund?

ye i did actually, i said to the girl that was serving me i was gonna do it. she even went and got the camera before my order came through.lol

The same thing happened to me at PC World the other day. But this time the chap at the PC World desk dialled their online customer services for me and handed me the phone so I could reserve the hard drive for collect-in-store 30 seconds later. Saved me £20! What a rigmarole!

As you've said you bought it from the store, they don't have to accept the goods back for a refund as they would now have to sell the camera as used. So I wouldn't bank on it.

If you had bought it online you could have send it back under the Distance Selling Regulations.

is it really worth me upgrading to the A450 guys? im sure i could sell my A290 at a slight loss but will be including a 3 year warranty and UV filter.

HELP

When I was in Jessops the other day, they made a big thing about their 28-day returns policy. They even offered me an Canon L lens at a 20% discount because it had been returned by a customer under the policy.

It's not a mistake, though the one on Jessops site has a 2nd lens included the 55-200 but that lens is only around £150. I got that camera for £299 a few weeks ago, compared to the A290 it has a better sensor, better high ISO performance and also has higher ISO settings, can do continuous shooting up to 7 FPS with exposure/AF locked or 5 FPS without them locked. Definitely try and return the A290 if possible.

So jessops wont take my camera back. is it worth my selling on me A290 and losing a few quid then re buying the A450??

How do you think that changing your camera will improve your photography?

i havent really started yet to be honest. i bought the camera then got called offshore. i only took a handful of pics.
is there that much difference between the 2 cameras that its worth me losing out on £50-60 or just keep it and put that money towards a lens

Sorry, I know nothing about the Sony lineup at all. If you have just started, then I am sure that the camera you have will be more than sufficient for your needs. I would personally use the extra on some glass. But, if by keeping it you will always wonder about the other one, and whether it would make a difference, then change it, as you'll always have that devil on your shoulder saying you made the wrong decision.

Maybe though you're not like that and would be satisfied in sticking with it once you made a decision. Not hugely helpful sorry, but only a decision you can make.

cheers buddy. i think il just keep it. no sense in wasting money

Hmm odd - I strode into Jessops about 6 weeks ago and picked up the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 at the t'internet price. I was just nice about it and asked was it possible - the lad said yeah why not.
