stuff for the car?

oil, antifreeze and spare bulbs would be good too.
Antifreeze = coolant (in most cases). Got that.
Oil - good idea, except I have no idea what oil it's got at the moment.

In a diesel I would also carry an extinguisher with CO2 in it in case you are unfortunate enough to end up with a runaway engine.
Got one. But I guess it is more use with petrol engines.

Jumpleads would be good, maybe even a spare battery.
Might get that eventually, so far I have enjoyed the chat with AA

A tire pump in case you got a slow puncture.
Got that

I personally wouldn't be without a pair of polarised sunglasses as my eyes are very sensitive and they work wonders in cutting through the winter sun glare.
Maybe, I just don't enjoy losing 2 stops of light , and with polarised ones it doesn't take long till you can't see LCDs.

torch and/or lantern, the latter would be useful if you got caught or stuck and needed light, save draining the car battery.
Andorid has now a very useful Torch app. Priceless.

pocket heaters, gloves and hat for the same reason as above.

obviously some of the above would probably only be necessary in winter and on long drives, but it's good to be prepared...

I just wanted to ask what this meant? I have only recently purchased my first diesel.

Apologies if this is a silly question :bonk:

Not a silly question but it probably will never happen to you.

Diesels burn oil not petrol. They'll burn any sort of oil so if the engine has the wrong sort of oil leak - say an oil pipe into the turbocharger of a turbo diesel - it'll suck all its own lubricating oil out of the sump, run merrily on that until it's used up its own oil and then, obviously, seize up with a very expensive graunch!

You might fight back by cutting off the air supply with a CO2 extinguisher ... or you might just want to stall the runaway engine.

Yup, seen this first hand with someone else's car. You can't turn it off, it redlines constantly. Not fun to watch - I was waiting for the engine to explode!!........

It ought to be possible to stall it - if you put it in 5th , come to a full stop, and the let the clutch up suddenly - chances are good that the load will stall the engine

Yup, that was the solution! :)
