Hi,

I would like to buy some lights so that I can take some decent portraits of my kids etc. I have a budget of about £500. What would you folks recommend please?

Thank you.

Rob

Lencarta are good value at around £500.

Agree, for £500 you will get a good set up - great value for money. I use all Lencarta gear if you want to check my flickr for examples.

P.S I like your Avatar :p

I like your avatar too...

What lencarta set up do you have please - is it a two or three light setup etc?

Thanks

Rob

What style of portraits will you wanting to do. The white bg studio style will be best with 3 lights.

Other styles you will get away with one or two lights..

I was ideally after the high key studio look as I thinkg they can look amazing. Would I point the 3rd light at the white background and the other two lights on the subject?

This is shot with very cheap lights . On white paper and yes a 6x4 sheet of perspex.
OH and some pp. But not an awful lot.

Thanks folks, there is just too much to choose from. I really think I need a 3 light setup and the Lencarta does seem to fit the bill on my budget but I will do some more research before parting with my hard earned cash!!

sorry Rob I missed this,

I bought a 3 head Smartflash set up to start with, then added another Smartflash head, then added a ElitePro 600w head.

I would suggest 2 lights dedicated on the background when doing high-key work. You can get away with less... but its less hassle and generally easier to control with two.

Many thanks Rob. I have now taken the plunge and bought a 3 head Smartflash system with loads of extra's!! Can't wait to get it now and give it a good whirl!!
Do you use a light meter at all?

Rob

Yes I use a light meter, I find it essential for setting up lighting ratios and to find the overall correct exposure for the shot. I wouldn't work without one, it would be a nightmare.

I think I may need to invest in one then!!!!

Thanks again Rob.
