hi everyone,

I would like to set up a small studio in our conservatory( 3m x 9m across) due to wanting to get in to portrait work but unsure on what i need in the way of lighting??

I like the idea of continuous light is there any disadvantages with this ?

I have come up with the following
Lighting
Back ground support
White Background
Will also go for black background

Thank you for any help and advice in advance

Thanks Craig

Thanks for the reply the light coming in isnt too bad as the roof has solar inserts but was also planing on using some sort sheets system on the inside of the roof to cut reflections down and the 2 end walls are solid so there is only glass running along the front.

There are huge disadvantages with using continuous lighting for portrait subjects, the short answer is... Don't.
Look at the various tutorials in the Lencarta Learning Centre which explain the benefits of flash and also explain how to get the best from it.

Even with the power of flash, you will almost certainly need to block out the light coming into your conservatory. You may just about get away with the unwanted light if you shoot at your camera's max synch speed, but the daylight will overwhelm your modelling lamps, which will make your life unnecessarily difficult. The background stand you linked to is seriously overpriced.

Thanks Gary for the info i do have a smaller room in the house but it is only 11ft x 7ft and doesn't have much light coming in so it is dark
To use the conservatory would i need to block all light coming in or would i get away with blocking off the half of the conservatory i was planning on using ?

I will have a look at some different lights and stand is there any you would recommend ?

Thanks Craig

Re your background, rolled white paper. Another alternative is to go to a (charity) shop and get a king size white linen bed sheet. Take it home wash it, iron it, great cheap alternative. I got mine for £1.

You'll want to block of light from outside that falls on your subject. Take a look at the Lencarta SmartFlash - out of stock at the mo, but will be back in stock very soon

Blocking the light from the ceiling shouldnt be a problem we already have solar inserts fitted so they block alot of light and i can set up some roof blinds, I was just looking on Lencarta and liked the look of Elitepro

Thanks Craig
