Hi everyone

Am looking to get a home studio set up for portrait work and haven't got a clue where to start. I have a 6m by 3m white back drop so just need help on lighting really please

Thanks

You really need to provide a bit more info, portrait work can be simple or complex - what do you want to achieve? Minimum requirement IMO would be a single decent quality studio flash unit, with softbox or umbrella (with associated light reflector) + stands and a largish 5-in-1 reflector. How much money do you want to spend though?

Cheers Paul.

What I want to achieve are just fun portrait shots like family portraits etc. with clear backgrounds minimal shadows. Simple stuff really I want continual light not flash. My budget is around £300- £350

Lighting a white background is actually not the easiest. There's a ton of threads on here if you do a little searching.

You may need a couple of lights just for the background. Then one for the subject and a reflector for fill.

Look at the Lencarta lights and send Garry Edwards a PM as he's very helpful and a lencarta rep.

IMO the only place for the use of continuous light is in the area of video - it just doesn't make any sense for still photography:thumbsdown:

There are many reasons why I feel flash is far superior: continuity, control, quality of light, availability of modifiers (unless going for pro standard light - but they actually cost more than many studio flash units, Dedolight being one of my favourites) are just a few.

To be clear, when I said lights I meant strobes :D
I would never recommend continuous lights
