Studio Props and Furniture

Large kids toys work...particularly wooden ones, rocking horses, that kind of thing :)

Before you buy any props, if you plan on buying 2nd hand, watch out for where and how they were stored. I am not just talking about the quality and appearance, but the smell :)! The last thing you want is to buy something that smells "fishy" :gag: which would make your clients want to leave asap.

1st thing to think about imo
is ... when shooting a family portrait how do you pose them / would you like them posed..

if you have a familey of 4 for example you may want mom / dad sat on a stool with a child sat in front of them and mom/dad stood behind them so all heads are quite close ..

so at least one stool..

but really alot depends on what / how you pose and shoot people...

for example my garage has a low roof so you wont see many shots of people stood up ..

work with what you have..

hope this helps in a small way at least..

Apart from big toys, get little funky things like big sunglasses, hats, balloons, cuddly toys, scarves, tiaras etc, all colourful things. And things like coloured beanbags. Make the shoots more fun as kids love them and also photos come out great and you can buy them cheap, ending up with lots of variations in photos you produce.

Its also amazing what u can do with just a plain duvet and put a white sheet or fleece on top for babies and little kids

Don,t forget the metal hoop, for holding there heads still while the lenscap is off !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look for shops closing down (going to happen a lot with the banks screwing up.) The old clothes rails are a cheap option for hanging sheets from for sitting shots.
