I am looking to learn/get experience in studio portrait photography. Can anyone point me in direction of best way to start? I have no experience/knowledge of studio work and just thought it would be a good thing to learn as always wanting to try new things :)
I am in glasgow if that helps

Where abouts in Glasgow Gerry? you Tube, books the web - all amazing places to find whet you need.

Thanks for info. I am in the southside

Get yourself on a course in a studio. Books and YouTube pale in comparison to a hands on approach, with someone to guide you.

Yes, read and learn all you can, but it won't really come together until you have a go. One studio head, stand, brollies etc - from £200. Have read about getting started on this thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=455817

Even before you look at a studio head you could make do with a flash gun and put it on a stand (the chinese ones are only about £40. A stand and a brolly add another £30 and there's a nice start.

However a studio head will give more power and will refresh quicker and you wont keep running out of battery lol

I went to college in paisley (reid kerr) and i know that on a certain day of the week a local camera club had access to their studios. Might be worth a thought.

One of the best clubs around too.

There's a club on the South Side too that offers studio time to members.

I have just completed a 10 week Studio Photography course at Glasgow College. Total cost was £122 and the course ran every Saturday morning from 9.30am-12.30pm. Excellent course and well worth looking into if you want to learn more about this type of photography.

They also run a Tuesday night course specifically for Studio Portrait Photography.

Thanks for all your comments.

Has anyone been to/know anything about Spencephotography in West Lothians- they do a four part course on it that looked quite good.

Barrie Spence is very good and he's not too far away. I've never been on any of his courses though. I've met him and enjoy his work and I think for you that could be a good start.
