can any one advise me on the settings i should start with

can you post a couple of pics with EXIF intact so we can see the problem?

post some pics with the exif data intact?

What settings are you using the camera on?

Ok matey :)

Your camera has a synch speed and you need to keep below that so ISO 100, f8 and 1/200 should get you in the right ball park if you have the lights turned up to between 1/3 and 1/2 power and about 6ft from your subject. (Very rough setup but should get you started!) Triggering the lights at the right time is the next bit. How are you doing that?

You can trigger them with an on camera flash but that adds light where you might not want it, so use a sync cable plugged into the camera if you have not got a wireless trigger.

Let us know how you get on :)

Are the flashes actually firing? If so, are you triggering them with the on-board flash in Commander iTTL auto mode? If you are, they will react to the pre-flash from the camera which goes off just before the main flash. It's so fast you can't see it, but the flash units will react and will have fired before the shutter even opens.

Just a possibility.

That's interesting!

I've got the 300s and never had a problem triggering them any way......sync,radio or IR. I did once wander off to far for the IR to work but that was entirely my fault.

Let us know how you are getting on!
