Yes
I think it will be powerful enough for 1 head, but don't even think about it, it will blow the head up.

The power output by something like this is very spiky and totally unsuitable for anything except lights or simple electric motors. You would have to add a very expensive sine wave converter into the system to run a studio flash, or any delicate electronic equipment

Oh really? So what would I look at getting because I don't really have alot of money for a Bowens generator etc etc, so is there a cheap alternative or anything?

The professional solutions - Lencarta Safari, Elinchrom Quadra, Profoto etc - are best but are probably outside your budget.

The Explorer is a compromise and will do the job that you hoped the generator would do, but again not cheap

Can't you manage with a hotshoe flash off camera for your outside shots? This thread may help

Calumet also do a 300B light and battery pack that reviews well...if your a Student you can get it for £250...but thats per head...

Or

Interfit do a ac/dc light with battery thats cheaper...http://www.hawksphotovideo.co.uk/in...llar_Xtreme_Single_Head_Kit_300w_Flash_INT474 ...£284 each
Or

You could double up cheaper Yong Nuo Flashes...

Or

Buy two 2nd hand Canon 550EX flash about £120ish each and a battery pack about £35 inc batteries each to speed up recycle time...(this is one of the things I do)...still £300ish...

Its a card call...

I know that invertors produce spiky chopped square wave outputs but why would a generator produce spiky output when the electricity is being generated by a rotating generator ?

I've just googled some and found this:

The picture on the site even shows a generator powering a flash !

I believe I've read about afew photographers using Honda EU2000i generators to power packs and heads, not 100% on monos though, I cant find anything on that.

The generator powering that flash is the Honda, probably the EU20i which produces a smooth sine wave output. Check out the price of it though.

I have read of several photographers using them for flash output. I doubt if the <£100 generator in the original post could compete.

Another +1 for the Calumet Genesis 300b. Just bought a spare battery for mine, I have been using it a great deal lately, keeping my Eli Quadra for Sunday best!

Modern digital flashes, especially multi voltage, do not like any generators though. If you must, use traditional style flashes and single voltage and they should be fine. I have run a Prolinca off a cheap generator that worked ok, but that was 10 years ago probably.
