im looking to get some studio lighting for family home portraits and am in need of some advise on what power lighting i need and whether 1 light or 2 is needed to accomplish this.

Depends on what setup you want portable or permanent...

You can do portraits with just one light but for proper setup you will need at least 3...

Have a look at http://www.lastoliteschoolofphotography.co.uk for some ideas...

You will also need background, light modifier, triggers etc....

Read some of the other posts, lots of people setting up home studios..

There's no real answer to how much power you need, and how many flash heads you need depends on the style of shots you want to take - which is bound to change as you gain experience and get new ideas.

But this article may help

Welcome to TP Shepps :)

The most important consideration is your budget. If you want to do the most basic portraits using just one light, you can do that pretty well for around £100 using a hot-shoe gun with a brolly on a stand, plus a reflector.

£300-400-500 gets you a decent two-head studio outfit, plus background system, plus flash meter, plus plus plus. You get the picture :)

I can :plusone: this. I've got a speedlite plus stand plus softbox and starting to take some awesome pics. You can do a lot with one light if you dont use a backdrop and use on location style shots, but when the backdrop is included it can start to add an extra dimension as if it is black you need to seperate the model from the background, and if is it white you need to blast out the white and with coloured background you may want to produce a lighted gradient on the backdrop... and ... etc....

Speedlites give you a very portable studio setup, whilst anything powered by the mains means you have plenty of leads and need to have a power supply.
