studio lighting/flash all in a bag?

I used my Lencarta SmartFlash on Wednesday at a Studio, it gave me chance to try it out properly. FOR ME.. I'm happy I'm I'm coming along with the shots, I still have a lot to learn and I think better knowledge of LightRoom3 could help too lol

For all these pix I used the shoot through brollie, the smart head was turned down also, FULL power was far too powerful!
Shot at f:8.
f:7.1 they went too exposed and f:9 too dark. So I kept at f:8 and worked around that.


Moving the light around created night shadows over the face and leaving the light where it was and me moving altered them again. I used my Nifty Fifty a bit more too so I tried more head shot/portrait style pix. Dropped to the Tamron 17-50 f:2.8 when i needed a bit more in the shot ;)

You're getting there.

My personal view is that
1. You're too busy creating light. You need to be creating shadow instead, it's shadows that enhance and define the shape of the face, not light
2. You're being a little bit ambitious - not a bad thing in itself but trying to do complicated things, in terms of fancy lingerie and more than 1 model does make life a bit more difficult. When you started taking driving lessons, were you able to drive downhill on an icy road at night whilst listening to the radio and chatting up the girl next to you? My advice is to start simple and try to get one thing right at a time.
3.I really like the mono one. I think I would like it even more if the light was higher... Yes, I know that I keep going on about the importance of placing the key light high enough to create shadows in the right places, but that's just me. Those of you who are going to Focus may like to watch my lighting demos on the Lencarta stand, you'll be able to see what I do and why, and you can ask questions and heckle me if you want. BTW, my coffee is white, no sugar:) Jeremy & Michael are giving demos too, don't heckle them because they're both nice people... The demos are a 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day except Wednesday, no 3 p.m. one on Wednesday
4. 3rd one down, spoilt by the smile IMO. It created the wrong kind of shadows and made her look older. That could be counterbalanced to some extent by using a larger and/or closer light to produce a softer result

Hmmmmm... 3 or 4 weeks until I get available funds (yearly Bonus), still working on shopping priority list :geek:

For the amount of time I'll use them, I'll possibly be going to look in the classifieds :)
 
There's another delivery due in 2 weeks.
By all means try the classifieds, but I've seen some second hand ones sell for more than the new price:)
