i'm after buying a studio kit(starter) but i only have a realy basic knowledge on what to look for. i'm after something that would be ideal for portraits and that i could possibly use outside for car shoots or would it be impossible to get something to do the both? i have a very tight budget of around £300 and have seen a few starter kits on ebay but some expert advice would be realy appreciated before i buy something
 
Good studio kit and one you can take out & about - prices start at about £1,000; ideally £2,000-ish for true power & portability

Anything less will be a real compromise IMO - if you can find it - I think you're setting your hopes & expectations too high

Time to resort to Plan B??? F even???

Let's start at what you want to photograph and why?
 
Kevtd....some on here have the cheaper Interfit (or equiv) kits and do OK with them. I started with a cheaper kit (and still have it) although I now use a Bowens kit. You get what you pay for. The Bowens just screams quality compared to my cheap kit.

If you only want it for head shots then the cheaper kits will be a good starting point for you.
 
Depending on the size of the subjects your shooting you could get yourself a decent multiple flashgun setup for £300. Head over to strobist.com and the strobist.com flickr group to see what can be done with little lights.
 
well i mainly want a kit to do nice pics of my children and partner(portfolio) and i enjoy taking pics of cars as its one of my hobbies but i was mainly interested in one for the portfolio side. i'm not going to be a professional or perfectionist i just want a kit that i can set up in my living room and take some canny pics with and if the lights could be used outside(wether their run by genny or car adaptor) that would be an added bonus.

im looking for the same kind of thing! I have been told that warehouseexpress do interfit kits... the EX150 is a couple hundred bucks. still considering it myself...
 
If you only have about £300 to spend, I would recommend that you have a look at the bowens forums and see about some used kits. I got a set (2 lights, stands, softbox, cables, and carry case) of Bowens Esprit II 500W lights from a studio closing down for a little over £300. Can't really beat that value.

If you are lucky it might even be possible to get a set of used 250W Esprit Geminis for about £300 and then you can later add the travel pack for onsite battery powered lighting. (not as good as Profoto, but still better then speedlight powered stuff).
 
I know bowens and elinchrom are obviously the best-but wouldnt an interfit 600ws 3 head kit be a good starting point for me i mean-as it means about £500 cheaper-but i was hoping at the top end of the interfit range it would be ok.
 
Just looking at the same sort of thing myself now. Have any of you managed to buy any of those kits yet? Would be interested on your opinion of them
 
My first kit was an Interfit Venus 300W twin kit. Soft box and Brolly included, as well as IR sender from the hot shoe.

I was pleased with the results and still use it for occasions where traveling the expensive kit isn't an option.

I think this RRP was just over £300.
