Studio Hire

The ones down south are about £45 for a couple of hours, with all lights and backdrops included.

Just a rough idea of prices.

******* hell! I paid £80 for two hours in a studio up here and they weren't even that well equipped (only have 2 flash heads albeit good ones and a couple of constant lights). I suppose they can charge what they like though when they're the only studio in the north east.

Jeez!!! Hey Ive got two good lights... abeit in my dining room ... you can take the whole day for £80

Seriously, though, I looked at a property recently that had a fab barn with it, it was beautifully refurbed inside.
All I could see was my studio before my eyes and the possibilty of renting it out to earn a bit back seemed like a great idea too.
House was in a lovely country lane, barely wider than one car .... with a ruddy big pub right opposite! :shake:

How do I go about hiring a studio, with lights and the big old paper backdrops? How much can I expect to pay? Does anyone know of any in the Preston area?

I'm at work atm so can't access my bookmarks but these guys http://www.studio-64.co.uk/ are in Mossley, Ashton and are a really nice couple and really helpfull. They used to run a studio in Rotherham but relocated their business in Mossley as they'd just had a baby and the commute from Manchester to Rotherham combined with long hours was a real bind. At the moment they're in a small unit while the main studio is being worked on so I'm not sure what they have in the way of paper backrounds atm but they've got a good set up for hi and low key effects as well as plenty of lights and various attachments. I particularly liked the hi-key set up when I used it for some art nude shots earlier this year at Rotherham. I'm sure I've got a bookmark for a studio in Preston on my pc at home.

Glad to be of help :) ,

I'm afraid I was either mistaken about there being one actually in Preston or else it's closed. I've found another one for you in Warrington. No idea what they're like but here's the link for you. http://www.innovations-studio.co.uk/

Do you have a model sorted? An experienced model can be a godsend for someone new to studio work. They'll be able to help with poses or even pose themselves if you wish while you get to grips with the lighting.

*Edit* Just a few more points...

Some studios arrange special nights/days when a group of togs can all have a go at shooting with flash lights. The studio sorts out the model(s) and the light equipment so all you have to do is turn up and have a go. Can be a good way to dip your toe if you've no experience at all as well as meeting other togs in the area.

Depending on the size of the studio you end up working in you may well find the "rubbish" kit lens produces fantastic results. You may well be using f/8 to f/11 of smaller and at those apertures the kit lens can produce great results.

As for cost, I pay between £15 and £25 p/h. If a studio is asking £30+ p/h I'd usually expect a discount on £ p/h longer sessions, likewise with a model.

For models, expect to pay ~£25 p/h for fashion/portrait, rising to £35-£40 for nude/fetish. Once again, like studios, most models will offer a discount for longer bookings.

Don't get conned into paying for a model release form. I've heard of some model's trying to charge an extra £50 for a model release form! I'd always make sure they'll sign it for no additional fee before planning a shoot with them....

I'll shut up now :D

Kev where are the studios in the NEast? They might be closer than Manc or Glasgow for me

There's one in cramlington, northumberland. Do a google for the media company and you should find the website.
