Hi all.

Having shot several location portrait shoots, I want to progress to a studio enviroment and explore the different lighting possibilities.

Can anyone suggest any such courses in the Kent and South East area? I have done the usual searches on google and the forum and its a little hard to find a course that comes recommended. I note Lencarta do courses but these wont be until April next year. Are there any others?

Equally, are there any other ways into the world of studio photography etc

Thanks in advance
B

Thanks David, I hear they are a good course but I was after any other courses in the area too. Also to see if there were any other recommendations.

Delighted to hear the course will be starting in April.... (FWIW I don't think that's been finalised yet and since I run them for Lencarta I'd expect to be one of the first to know).

Jon at Village (http://www.village-studios.com/jon_cook_at_village_studios/Home.html) is a nice guy and has a lovely studio. He may run courses.

If not...well, I'm always available for private or group tuition :)

I can also say that Jon at Village Studios is a thoroughly nice chap, at least he was when I phoned him with some very stupid questions! He was very patient and more than helpful.

Thanks for the replies guys. Providing its within the rules, a couple pm's will be sent in due course!

I was really keen to go on that Lencarta course - didn't want to have to wait for April and can't afford private tuition. Will look elsewhere I guess. I know Park Cameras run courses. While not in Kent they are not a million miles away either.

You can always talk to Jonathan about a private course - it may be cheaper than you think - and money spent on learning from someone who is a known quantity (as opposed to spending a lesser amount of money with someone who is an unknown quantity) is money well spent.

As for the Lencarta courses, I'm hoping that the will run again next year but no decision has been made as yet.

They have been sponsored by Lencarta and it was always known that they would lose money, but they lost a LOT of money this year. Leaving aside the money bit, what Lencarta got out of these courses is goodwill and publicity - but the publicity has dried up badly. I used to reckon that about half of the attendees would post about their experience of the course on at least one forum, and people have been specifically asked to do so (basically "Say what you like, but please say SOMETHING") but only one person posted about the course before last that I ran, and nobody from the last course posted anything. And Jonathan has had similar lack of support.

This doesn't help, especially when the Company has made a point of spending money and time giving something back to the community.

well it's probably too late and insignificant but I can tell you that I am very close to purchasing something and a lighting course would give me the confidence i need to tip me over the edge and make the purchase. I can't believe I am the only one in that position :)

I will speak with Jonathan but as I know it will be a lot more than the cost of the lencarta course. It has to be - it was a group course and part funded by lencarta! :)

Hmm there seems to be interest in training in Kent. We should talk.....

Yes, but Lencarta funded a hotel and a model - there may be a workaround to that...

Let me make myself clear. I'm hoping that we will be able to run these courses next year. We've had tremendous positive feedback from the people who attended them over the last two years and I've lost count of the number of people, including some pretty experienced studio photographers, who have had their eyes opened to what can be achieved, very simply, in the studio.

I am in Surrey, near Gatwick, but willing to travel for the right course. Jonathan - i will pm/email you.

Benny & Dubcat ................. I attended one of the Lencarta lighting courses with Garry back in April. It was superb and a great learning curve that has helped me to understand lighting. You will not be disappointed on any Lencarta course and although I have not been on one with Jonathan, I have heard very good reports about his.

One thing it is not, it is not a course where you will be pushed towards any particular product to buy. Garry and Jonanthan are very open minded and happy to discuss any product you may be considering, butb their courses have offered a discount should you buy Lencarta equipment within 3 months of the course. Lencarta equipment is excellent, which you will see yourselves on their courses, but so are a lot of other manufacturers. If you do buy later, don't by the cheap stuff off Amazon and the like, just remember you get what you pay for.

My advice to you both would be to get booked on one of their courses of chat with Jonathan to see if he can help out sooner. You wont find better tuition anywhere.

Malcolm

Happy Christmas to you all

Thanks Malcolm :)

I'm off for Christmas now followed by a short break somewhere warmer :).

I'll look at some options in the New Year.

since this will not be an official lencarta course I guess there will be no discount on gear.
