Hi,

After much thinking im stuck between the following , of which will give me the best results for portrait, studio use?

  • Canon 7d
  • Nikon D300s
  • Sony A900
  • Canon 5d MkII
  • Olympus E30
  • Sony A700

All will have very good lenses (ie nifty fifty's or fixed aperture zooms etc)

what are you shooting? And where are the images being used?
 
Isn't there a Sony 850 now?
 
as above

if they are going to be big printed then the a900. infact it seems that the a900 and 5d mark 2 are then only "pro" spec there is as the others are semi pro, the carl ziess lenses for sony are a dream, you could literally fall in love with them. i dont know about canon lenses apart from the bigger range but you'll probably only ever have 3 or 4 of them.
 
The view through the 5D viewfinder is to die for, a full frame old fashioned massive image.
Try before you buy, obviously.

How much space do you have....?

I went for full frame as my space is limited so i could use a wider lens to get the whole body.

Hi,

Well the room is about 15ft wide x 25ft deep so i have plenty of room. I will be shooting mainly kids portraits but would love to get into glamour/nude model shoots.

Obviously thats a long way away but i dont want to buy into a system then have to change at a later date.

What image size will your market require? That may affect your choice, I thought I read certain publication/libraries only accept certain sizes, anything smaller and they dont purchase.

Well any of the cameras i have mentioned will produce A3 easily so i cant see me being restricted by that?
 
The 5d mark 1 is quite a good choice still, and a very cheap way of getting a fantastic full frame sensor. That, the 24-105mm and a few primes (28, 50 and 85 and a 105 macro or so) would be a fantastic studio camera setup :)

Hi,

I was going to get one of these , but heard so many horror stories about the shutters packing up early , and obviously i cant buy a new one now so i will be buying second hand and have no warranty at all.

for studio work fast AF and tracking aren't as important
all are nice cameras but if I was buying for a studio I would go for a full frame camera
so that's the 5Dii...is the D700 in your price range? built in flash remote control etc.

I could afford the D700 but would skinme a bit for xmas then.

Ive just come off the phone to Park Cameras who have said the Pentax K20d is a very good studio camera , as the iso is kept nice and low (he said the k20d is brilliant upto iso800 but does fall off at 1600) and the skin tones it produces are beautiful.

Do you think hes right?

it was pixel size rather than format size, something like 18Mp, I seem to recal that based on my 50D not quite making it, might be worth a Google just to be sure.
 
I think i may be thinking too ahead of myself actually. I took my kids to a local photography studio that used Fuji S5 Pro's and the results were brilliant. I also took my kids last year to the local Olan Mills that used a Canon 40d and they were brilliant quality aswell.

Im far, far away from ever selling my pics and just want a camera that i can grow with and get really good at studio work.

Surely then, any of the ones i have mentioned would do a good job?

I can see the benefit of full frame but to the normal public , would they actually tell the difference between a 40d and a 5d?

Sounds sensible. No point in jumping in at the deep end, all the models you mention would suit studio photography I bet. The resolution on the Sony models is great (iirc)...

I doubt it.
I looked at a 40D, 50D and a 5D, had they got a new, as opposed to demo model, 5D in stock I would have bought it, it just felt so 'right' (to me). Having said that AF on the 50 is better overall, so I bought that. But the viewfinder on the 5 was sooo nice :)
 
In a studio environment i am right in thinking that the iso woul dbe at 100 (so any of the cameras i have mentioned should be excellent quality) and the normal portrait aperture would be say f8?

Would a prime say f1.4 be only an advantage if i want to get some really creative shots?

D3X would be a dream. An even bigger dream would be a Blad H3DII. Only £10K now, a bargain! :D

Yeah right, like I've not looked.

The CSV is still £10K and I could get the whole blad as Gary points out above for the same money! (if I had it!) :)

Rare as hens teeth second hand.

I have considered something like a P20 but the CSV just looks right somehow. And I still only have one lens on the blad (80mm) and I KNOW what a digi back would mean.......more lenses!

I really need a sugar daddy! (That I don't have to pay back ;))

Iso 100 or 200 won't make any appreciable difference in what you see

Better quality lenses tend to have larger apertures but any lens f/2.8 or faster will give you better focus even if you're shooting at f/8 (re-Canon bodies)

I have been toying with upgrading my 5D to a MkII but if i'm being honest I really don't need to.

Its under 12 months old and in spanking condition and takes great images.. so why upgrade ?

If you can find a good second hand 5D I would seriously take a look at that too or spend a few(phew) hundred quid more and get a MKII
 
frankly it comes down to photographic ability I think, experience etc.
and the camera will help of course.

I'm not a pro but with decent glass you can get excellent results.
I know the Fuji was popular for studio work for skin tones but from the list I would still go for the 5D Mkii due to the accessories available and lens options, also full frame of course

quick example.
this is a picture of my dad using a 40D, 50mm f1.4, and off camera canon flash (brolly) in the lounge of my parents house (photoshopped out the shadow behind pop's head as I only had a single light source). I was very pleased with the results and clarity.

with a 5D I'm sure it would be nicer even.
 
Hi,

Well ive found somewhere doing asian stock FF cameras for cheap with international warranty.

The prices are :

Sony A900 @ £1430
Sony A850 @ £1330
Canon 5dMkII @ £1500


He says the international warranty is better as if the camera breaks whilst on holiday you can get it fixed?

Am i being led up the garden path or is internation warranty ok ?

The last thing i want to do is buy one of these and then cant get it fixed under waranty here.

you could do with an international warranty , but for getting them fixed on holiday? rubbish?? or it breaking on holiday? i've never heard of anyone who will fix your kit without it being away for 3-4 weeks whilst they umm and arrr...also it would have to go to a certified repair establishment. where it breaks is irrelevant. it's where you live that counts. anyway...insure it!

UK warranty 5D's are about 1680 I think, kerso etc.
