Getting my first experience in a studio soon and a model has been hired for the event. The studio is not large, perhaps 10 metres long by 4 metres wide, and has all the lighting and backdrops. My camera is a Canon 60D, what lenses and equipment would be best for this model shoot?

I have the following:

  • Canon EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM
  • Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
  • Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
  • Nifty Fifty
  • Sigma 30mm f1.4
  • Sigma 150mm f2.8 APO Macro DG HSM & Ring Flash
  • Nissin Di866 pro flash

Would say you would have the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM, on the most,,

thou all depends on what style your looking ,,,, id just take them all :D

I've got most of those, and the 10-22 isn't really a good idea in the studio as it distorts people too much. My choice would be the 24-70 or may be the 50mm. Don't be afraid to try others, just use them as a reference point for the future.

What metering mode would I use when the background is lighter than the subjects and vice versa?

If you're in a flash lit studio, the exposure will be measured with a flash meter, the camera will be in M and you'll let the ISP and aperture as per the meter reading. Your camera meter will play no part.

If its a daylight studio, you'll meter and adjust just the same as anywhere else. As always, it's knowing what you're measuring that dictates metering modes.

I found my Sigma 50mm was quite good wide open but didn't impress stopped down. 24-70 will do nicely with a 70-200 for headshots.
