Grant (my little boy) is off to Uni this year. for those of you who have been what is the bit of kitchen equipment you couldn't have done without?

also anything else i may need to get him??

Thank you in advance

never went to uni myself but I have heard that the JML/Lakeland Microwave Omelette makers are a big hit - assuming he likes eggs/omelettes :)

Sorry Terri, it seems like only yesterday I went but before you know it my son will be heading that way (I hope).

Toasters and kettles are always good but they may already have them in halls. A sandwich toaster is a nice plus.

By the way, a basic cook book may be a good idea if he has not cooked for himself before.

Good luck to both of you

A can opener

I am being serious here, a can opener, I know of 3 people who went out shopping and bought lots of cans only to find out when it was time to cook.... no can opener!

No worries and thank you already ordered a couple of books for him.

and he loves toasted sandwichs so will have a look at getting a cheapish one for him

thank you he isn't keen on them but i'll ask him

As far as kitchen equipment goes what we did was wait until we actually got to the uni. see what was already there (different halls have different levels of equipment.) Talked to room mates and then went a brought what we needed. It also meant I could just about see out of the car as we went down. As we didn't have loads of kitchen equipment we didn't need. When we bring her back at the end of the year that will be another matter.

Our daughters friend is even worse off, in that her hall is used out of term time so she has to clear her room of everything at the end of each term.

Ah now that is a good point thank you. hadn't thought of that

My room had a main light and a desk lamp, so an extra desk lamp was useful for bedtime reading (oh do be quiet at the back).

The mains sockets were all some Lilliputian round pin standard, so the local hardware shop made a killing on suitable plugs.

Cake tins and a mixing bowl can be used to earn all sorts of favours...

cheap pans, everyone else will use them and they will end up pretty beaten up, best fryingpan you can afford to sacrifice knowing the above, no one will bother to clean the grill pan so after about 2 weeks bacon sarnies will have to be fried.

When I went to university I elected entirely self catering, so bought pans, frying pan, kitchen knives (one long, one short), chopping board, tin opener, roasting dish / oven tray, cutlery, plates etc.

Most of it was the stuff my parents kept for use in the caravan (so plastic plates, worn out pans and so on) and while I did cook, I also tended to buy a lot of frozen stuff that was twenty minutes at gas mark 5.

Believe I'm still using the same plastic chopping board over 22 years later!

I had to do that, but I had a year off before university, worked full time and bought a car (Morris Marina 1.8 de luxe, £500). The rest of the money I earned ran it and its replacement for three years.

The car enabled me to transport everything to and from each term.

Get him Katie Stewart's Cookbook:

http://www.waterstones.com/watersto...tewart/katie+stewart27s+cookery+book/4583670/

It's an absolutely brilliant all rounder and one that I still refer back to after 15 odd years at times (the link is to the revised edition).

As long as he has the basic 3 or 4 pans and a couple of wooden spoons + cutlery, the ability to dish up a decent meal for a date is an absolute winner in the romance stakes.

Also, if you want to be really popular send him away with some ready made food in portion sized freezer bags (chicken curry, casserole etc.) so he can just stick it in the microwave and get some decent, healthy, tasty food without much effort. Will be massively appreciated during freshers week. Having good food to eat without any effort will also help keep away the freshers flu.

thank you everyone i am writing all this down so i can get shopping for some things.

Now a silly question what about an iron and ironing board? (he won't have the assistance of the laudry ladies at school or his sister at home)

Ironing? The only time I did any ironing was for my Army uniform, I've never done any other ironing.

I took a wok and a meat cleaver - stir fry all the way paper, bag of frozen mince, frozen peppers, sweetcorn and pease etc and you always have a meal you can impress with......

Ironing/?????- now that is womens work:D:D:D

Oh yeah also make sure he knows your Tesco password and you have your credit card registered with them, that way he can order all the food he needs...(and the booze too!)

After a while things like punch bowls become handy for parties. Get him a box of rubber gloves from your local motor factors should be about a fiver, that way he can clean the toilet without moaning (I had ensuite).

Lots of herbs, spices glasses etc. I think as someone mentioned a toasted sandwhich maker is a perfect student thing, fast cheap and hot. Also no naked flames involved so perfect for the after SU £1 a pint night munchies.

Oh and get him a few glade plug ins, you know that makes sense.

We brought our daughter an iron (again when we arrived), just because some people invariably cant iron & ruin the plate.

IKea do do a couple of starter boxes with loads of stuff in them. Might be worth a look.
