a little bit of advice and its not on the latest matter to hit the news...

2 years ago i repaid my student loan and received a letter saying i had done so and the balance was £0.... over joyed! but then recently i got a letter saying i owe £83 and it includes the interest from the years i hadnt paid. Spoke to the student loans company and they said i had to pay but were at least willing to remove the interest. i explained my letter i had got from them but they werent interested and asked to set up a direct debit or pay full amount, i said no to both.

This surely cant be right

You need to get them to say why the original letter stating zero balance was wrong. I would pursue this in writing rather than by phone as phone calls cannot be used as evidence in court. If they cannot offer a good reason why their previous letter was wrong, they would not find it easy to pursue in court.
