Or a manfotto, I have one and it is really sturdy great as a walking aid as well when out and about.

Its in the car at the moment so I can not give you the model but I might have put the details in my kit list.

The Velbon Sherpa Pro Pod CF-6 would be more comfortable to use in cold conditions than an alloy `pod. At £69 from Morris you'd qualify for free postage. It's 153cm; taller ones in the range cost more.

But that may be the brand you've already had a poor experience with?

The Manfrotto 681 is a strong, tall and reasonably-priced conventional alloy `pod. The 680 is shorter and packs smaller.

You might want to look at the posh end of the range with really quick setup actions.

I have a Manfrotto 682, I went from using a slik monopod and couldn't believe how much more solid the 682 was.

I have a manfrotto 134 never ever given me a problem in all the years I've had it, I bought a really good monopod first time saves all the hassle of having to buy 3 or 4 then buy the one you really wanted in the first place

Manfrotto 679 here.

Manfrotto 682 here.

The foot is handy very occasionally for using the monopod as a flash stand. I would not leave a camera balanced on it. The foot adds a lot of weight to the monopod and if you don't need this feature then get the 681. The foot also rattles like buggery when stored in the bottom of the monopod..

I have removed the foot from my 682 and keep it in the car boot. I know where it is when I need it. I have replaced it with a walking stick rubber foot. Much lighter and does not rattle. It is a one minute job to put the foot back on if I need it. Best of both worlds :-)

Hi,

I use my 1D Mark II and Sigma 500mm ( total weight about 5kg ) on a Manfrotto 681B, does the job nicely for me and it's only 3 section ( two toggles ) so nice and quick to use.

Mike.

Manfrotto 685B Neotec.

Quite pricey but is soo easy to set up and adjust, very quickly...

Manfrotto is well known for monopod.. I was using Velbon RUP-4 but current one only lasted a couple of months.. Manfrotto 682 seems to be populor but I know I would never ever need the feet so 681b looks right, (does 46 quid delivered sound fair?). but closed its a good 8cm longer than the velbon .. hmm

I use a Manfrotto 681B and it's nice & sturdy.

No problems in the last 3 years.

:)

I use a Manfrotto 681 (which is the 681B in aluminum rather than black color).

This monopod is excellent in almost every way. It is sturdy, tall and really light for a pod with those characteristics. In fact I was researching monopods for a recent trip to Alaska and was surprised that the Manfrotto 681/681B weighed less than many, much more expensive, carbon fiber pods. It is 161 cm tall and weighs just .77 kg. It has a suggested capacity of close to 12 kg.

I can use a Canon 40D, 400mm f/5.6L lens on a Manfrotto 3241 gimbal mount with no problems regarding stability. This is a total package of close to 4 kg. I would have no hesitations in putting a far heavier package on this pod.

There is one drawback to the 681/681B. They are 3 section pods and do not collapse into as compact a package as would a 4 section pod. However, the light weight and the stability of this pod is owed in a large part its to being 3 section rather than 4 section. If you can live with a pod that is about 67 cm long when folded, the Manfrotto 681/681B is a great choice.

BTW, I also use a Kirk Enterprises MPA-1 swivel head on my pod. This is a Manfrotto head that has been modified to take a Kirk Arca Compatible quick release. That way, I can use my Arca Compatible plates and L-bracket from my tripod head.

Really Right Stuff also distributes monopod swivel heads with Arca Compatibility.

I would say the strongest one available would be a Gitzo GM5541
