Strobist Umbrella hot shoe adaptor - which ones?

Dav, you need calumets really.

I also always use L-brackets now too as it allows the light to be so much more central.

Thanks Dean.

Doesn't look like they come with the shoe? Am I wrong?

Cheers.

Dav

Thanks Marcus. Thanks Dean.

Right - I think I'll just go buy those. I HATE struggling with cheap bloody kit.

My advice to anyone buying strobist kit - don't buy cheap tacky crap! Just IM very HO!

Cheers.

I agree!

Me too! Buy cheap, buy twice. It's always been the case.

Whilst this thread is running, I am looking for some cheap umbrella hot shoe adaptors, I won't use them often so £20 a pop is a bit too much. So if you were looking at getting replacements, I would be happy to make a sensible offer on the used ones to soften the blow of the more expensive kit. Let me know...

Cheers.

How much, Scott?

Not cheap mate, works out to about 38 squid after postage, but I like the idea that you can put a softbox, umbrella, beauty dish, octabox etc on it :)

Ooooooo - I like that!

Is it compatible with a 580EXII?

Also, anyone know the weigth. It looks chunky!

I may have to follow my own advice here and buy quality........

I looked into these before and it opens up a whole new realm of modifiers which as long as it can fit an 'S' fitting, you can use it with your speedlite. At the time I decided that there were enough modifiers to suit my needs available for speedlites, but when I one day invest in a mains powered setup will also invest in a few of these so that I can use my studio modifiers with my speedlites and not have two sets of kit so to speak, only hoping that available watt/seconds doesnt ever become an issue!

Yes it will work with the 580ex, even better if you have the ST-E2 or another 580ex then it will work ettl as you can rotate the flash within the bracket :)

I know nothing about the ST-E2. I thought I was missing out on something - but then I realised it's IR not radio. It's a real shame that Canon didn't go for wireless built into the camera body / guns. Here's looking to the future :)

The ST-E2 for all its shortcomings works well indoors, I quite often grab it when I cant be bothered messing around too much. I much prefer the skyport's and the meter tbh.

I would love a set of pocketwizard flexttl's but too rich for my blood and i like to mix heads and guns so the skyport's work well for me :)

I can understand that :)

I just find it all such a mess! Shame really.

Turned up today, just quickly set it up with a brolly to test and fired a couple of shots off, works a treat.

It's really well made and has a bit of weight behind it, comes with the reflector and the flashgun head sits perfectly central, the foot can be moved up and down the back plate.

You can use an rf602 receiver as a pseudo 'cold shoe'. Just dont turn it on.

That's what I do. The price difference between a real cold shoe and the yongnuo receiver isn't great, and you get a spare receiver into the bargain.

I use flash zebra for my strobist bits, the deluxe umbrella adapter is great

Is it just me, or are produces mixing up cold and hot-shoe? Or maybe I got my definitions wrong ...

Hot shoe - on camera (or elsewhere) with electric connections to trigger the camera
Cold shoe - no contacts with the flash-base.

No?

Wait until you have to carry four of the little buggers.

Excellent quality, but the weight soon builds up.

Thanks for the info. Guys, The Calumet one is now on my list
Dave

I have a couple of Calumet adaptors, (was lucky enough to get them 1/2 price :D). Good quality and they have no problem with the 580ex 11 or the normal type feet on the 430ex and the nissin guns.

Also have the interfil xs bracket that was posted, that's fantastic for the main light with it's S type mounting, but for sheer versatility on light positioning the calumets win.

Which dealer did you use to order it from

You can get the interfits for the same cost from Jessops too.

You can, if you can get em in stock

Took 2 days to turn up from Morrisphoto or a week to order into Jessops

I have a Lastolite tilting shoe adapter for my lighting stand and 430EX II. I am hoping to grab an umbrella from a camera show in a couple of weeks. I have just noticed that the umbrella holder part of the shoe adapter runs parallel to the the top of the shoe. This means that when the flash is fitted there is no way it can be made to fire into the centre of the umbrella. To make matters worse, I am sometimes likely to use the set up with some Yongnuo ebay radio triggers which displace the flash even further away from the centre of the umbrella.

By comparison the Manfrotto equivalent has the umbrella hole angled so that the centre of the umbrella would be in direct firing line of the flash.

So, my question is:

a) should I be worried about the flash not pointing into the centre of the umbrella?
b) should I just replace the umbrella/flash shoe adapter with the Manfrotto one?

Also, should I get a shoot through or reflective umbrella???

Thanks everyone. Cheers!

Calumet ones currently OOS but apparently they have 500 on order...not sure when they will be back in stock
Dave

I've ordered 2 calumets and 1 interfit.

If the former are crap I can have a dig at Dean. If the Interfit is crap I can have a go at Scott. :)

Let me know what you think of them when they arrive Dav please as I'm thinking of the Calumet one at the moment
