I should be receiving my new flash and radio triggers this week along with a softbox and lighting stand.

Now I'm totally new to strobist work and have been reading as much as I can. One thing that pops up a lot are the use of gels to add effects and to correct WB of the flash.

The one that seems most common is the CTO gel, now I understand the basics of when this gel would be needed but what i'm not sure about is do the CTO gels come in one strength or are there different grades (hope that makes sense )

Also what would be the basic gels you'd recommend for a novice and where's the best place to buy them?

Many Thanks

Hi Philip,

Yes the gels come in different strengths - full cut, half, quarter etc. Lower strengths are good for adding colour to a shot (eg faking a sunset) and the full cuts are good for converting lights from their original colour to whatever you want. There are different conversion gels like CTO but I forget their name and don't want to mislead you. Then there are dozens and dozens of effects gels.

I got my small sample of gels from eBay(UK) but I cannot find that supplier now. This looks decent though: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Strobist-Coll...ories_CameraFlashUnits_JN&hash=item1c1a5d8081

I would say don't bother with the kits you won't use 97 of those other colours ;)

Get some full sheets of 1/4, 1/2 and Full CTO, Window Green, some velcro, and cut your own.

Sorry don't know any UK suppliers.

Email to lee filters asking for a sample pack. I did this about a year ago they posted a massive pack of every filter they do and they are the perfect size for the flash! ;)

I also have the alchemy33 ebay set and recommend it
