I am sure in some way or other this has probably been asked before, but..

I was watching one of the Digitalrev challenges on Youtube where a pro is given a cheap camera and set a number of challenges with it. In the one which interested me the 'Pro' Zak Arias was using a nondescript camera and using its built in flash to trigger his own hand held flash unit. I couldn't see the make of the flash unit but it was triggered by the cheapo camera's flash apparently with no other hardware. I have a Canon 430 EXii and 580EXii which I would love to use with my Fuji X100. So my question is: Can it be done without additional triggers or leads?

Any thoughts, input appreciated.

No. You can do it with a lot of guns that have a basic optical slave built in, but Canon guns do not.

You would need a separate optical slave attached to a Canon gun (and Canons need a special version of those too) but it's easier done with a simple radio trigger instead.

I couldn't find a way to do it with my current kit but at least I now know I am not missing a simple trick. I suppose I could buy a suitable 3rd party strobe which will work with the X100. Any recommendations from other Fuji users?

I once used the Fuji S5600 Bridge camera to trigger a Yongnuo 460ii, which can be bought for thirty-odd quid.
It worked well at shutter speeds right up to the max of 1/2000 sec.

Yongnuo 560's will also work. Alternatively, depending on how far you want the flash from the camera an extension cord could be used with one of your current flashes.
