Strobe Lighting book

I am currently making my way through Light, Science and Magic. It teaches you the principles behind lighting, the characteristics of various surfaces and how they reflect light. I think it's pretty good because it doesn't tell you what to do and where to place your lights or make ant creative decisions for you. It's more about teaching you to recognise for yourself what effect different light sources and different placement will have and letting you decide for yourslf how you want the scene to look.

John, you'll learn everything you need to know by working through lighting 101 and then 102.

Joe McNally's The moment It Clicks and The Hot Shoe Diaries are worth a read for inspiration.

Thanks all,

The lighting 101 102 look very good. Been going through the 101 part and looked at previews of the Joe Mcnally book.

I see joe mcnally's "the hot shoe diaries" he has used a nikon camera. How do the canon uses find this book?

Thanks,

john

It's almost pointless for Canon users. The Moment it Clicks is brilliantly inspirational, but you won't really learn much about the technical side of things. You'll get everything you need from strobist.com

He does mention Nikon gear quite a lot but most of what he talks about in that book is lighting setups and how to analyse a situation and pick the diffuser for a certain situation rather than plugging Nikon gear :)

And to be fair, most of the CLS stuff mentioned is just +1EV here, -1EV there.

The rest's about nicking bedsheets and getting creative.

Syl Arena is working on a book for Canon shooters, but it'll be a while before it's available.

Strobist for the core foundation of lighting

Joe's books for inspiration / playbook ideas

Then for Canon specific stuff Syl runs http://speedliting.com/

That'll keep you busy for most of the summer.

+1 for joe's books, great stuff, i shoot canon, and found them no problem... most things are just different names for the same thing anyway... :), but to be honest, its meant to inspire the photographer, not be a manual of how to use a flash, so what he uses doesnt really matter... just what he does with it...

McNallys books are worth reading whether you shoot Nikon, Canon or don't even own a camera, they're just great reads if you love your photography!
As Jason said, Syl is working on his Canon book, but it seems you have enough to be getting on with until it comes out in a few months.
I've also heard of a wedding book that's meant to be good for flash but I haven't got it (yet) and can't remember which one it is!
