Street Portrait- The Challenge!

That's why I asked on what crop sensor for the 85mm - but it appears it doesn't matter!

Oh, I know it doesn't matter within the conditions laid down, just curious is all ;)

85mm FF is similar AOV to 135mm on crop, but if I want to shoot the 85mm and get closer I can always crop my final image,

What has focal length got to do with taking a street picture, a good picture that conveys the themes intention shouldnt be judged on the equipment side of things surely?

Got to agree with blinkerz here surely its the image content that will be judge should not matter if it was taken with a box brownie or a 700mm VR lens its the image that counts. I get my best results with my 70-200 not because of the focal length but because its a sharp as a sharp thing...

Guys the focal length thing is only to add an extra twist to things, you know, to spicen things up a bit. Im well aware that great portraits can be taken with ANY length. Its like when Ed Gary had the "shoot a Robin with a 50mm", it just makes it more fun.

right, proper idiot question here, what is and isnt alowed in street portrait, do we need *** in it, coz i got a nice shot in mind outside my house, but it would only include people walking past - out of DOF. also, does not asking to take the pic, then paying a few coppers into a hat count? (beggers)

I can understand where your coming from here Luke. I think the shorter focal length will be more a 'who has the most nerve' competition rather than a street portrait competition. Personally I prefer to take portraits at a long focal length to compress the perspective and get a nice OOF background. While this is possible with a shorter length, I feel it would take away my own personal style of portrait photography whether that be in a studio, or on the street trying to get someone while there are going about their own business.

I feel your idea needs slight tweaking to appeal to the masses as there does appear to be some negative emotion towards your suggested idea. Plus with the differing crop factor as mentioned by other esteemed members of this forum, your recommendation of 85mm maximum vary between camera bodies as to how far a participant could be from their desired subject of the competition.

I feel you would be wise to lift your restriction on this occasion, to see how popular your competition could be. By all means you continue with your 50mm, they are great pieces of glass. From reading here, potential entrants would be happy and more likely to participate, if they could use their favorite piece of glass for your challenge.

I get where you are coming from luke but the fun for me is getting the image I am after regardless of the glass that is hanging off the camera...

But hey its horses for course..

I think Natjag has nailed it on the head and phrased it more eloquently than my previous attempt.

Don't get me wrong I do not mind slapping on nifty or the 28mm and getting in there but some time the image suffers for it... I like to get a sense of isolation sometimes with my street shots and also the compressing of the scene comes into play.

As I said in the quote of you last post its horses for course.

Cheers Nigel

Well I had zero luck in Brum yesterday.
As I was there on my own for a meeting and had to take the train, I had too much stuff to take care of and be aware of.
Gutted really as it'd be great to get in there with just the cam, no bag etc and just wander about.

I was walking around with my 300mm on all day once.. got some great portraits! such a challenge too! i know the restriction has been lifted, but i think make people use their LONGEST lens!! it too easy to get shots with wide lenses.. you know the score.. a little crop here and there and its perfect.. but with LONG..;)

Easy with wide? No no no no no.....it is terrifying. I did it for an entire week or two, non stop, and eventually got to grips.

With the long lens? Just wonder, point, shoot, no worries.

Gary.

Ha ha, my longest lens is my 135L

And a cracking lens that is too.. Me wants one!!!...

Its the other way around Garry.. there's soo much room for error with wide! when you are at 300mm you really have to work for good composition..

50mm & 85mm.. their all portrait lenses.. you couldn't call a 300mm that now..

If you want to win a car race you turn up with a fast car.. but if you tuned up with a hore and cart and STILL won!!! well, id know a hero if i saw one.. ;)

I'm struggling with motivation to do street stuff lately, maybe that will help me... thanks for the challenge, Luke

I can understand though.. turn up at a banger race with a Scooby.. ;)

85mm

Had a rethink, can't get into Town today (mainly due to my not getting out of bed until 10.15) so will go next week. I am going to take my 85L and my 12-24 Siggy. Going to have a go with the Siggy at 12mm on FF, so will have to be close, like 2 or 3 feet away.

Haven't done any street stuff since I did my A' level back in the early 80s and things have definitely changed with regard to how photographers are perceived now. The 'punks' around at the time made great subject matter with their dark clothes and piercings and were not too bothered by the camera.

The 45mm lens I was going to use was a tilt shift, and thus I would have been taking pictures of people who would have thought the camera was pointing elsewhere.

Lotus!

Built in England out of tin cans and bubble gum..

Crazy cars though.. but i likes the comfort stuff.. a nice tourer for me ..

Ignore him Gary - he daren't turn up at my next London meet for some silly reason... (struggles to find chicken smiley )

DD

Your only saying that because you know i cant come!

Loves ya really Dave..

My longest length is 50mm lol. Fraggle and Gary I see both your point about lengths. With a wider lens- yes you can crop but it is ALOT scarier!!

Another chicken - IF I did Street again, I'd use my 10.5mm fisheye

DD - the brave ;)

2 hours walking around city centre and only 8 photos taken (1 is ok, the rest is rubbish). I really am stuggling :bang:

Where do we post our entries? I done one last night at 17mm, with flash, the shocked look is priceless, Oh and no cropping, It filled the frame.
