street photography dangerous

It takes a peculiar kind of idiot to assault someone who you KNOW has the means to your later identification in his grasp!
 
I'd be ****ed off if someone took a shot of me while I was in a bad mood though. That dude could have just split up with his missus, lost his job and written off his car the day before.

You never know.

Our hobby can be quite intrusive and if you don't respect people, then they usually don't respect you much in return. An over-reaction it may be, but it is understandable imo.
 
Its london lol of course you cant take photos of people cos they aint friendly down there.... last time I was there, I stood for about 30 minutes asking people for directions and they ignore you lol
 
Nah - sorry, don't buy that at all. It is neither acceptable NOR understandable to retaliate against someone with violence for doing something like this, regardless of how bad a day you've had! Of course all those things that were mentioned "could" have happened to the chap - in all honesty though, I suspect his excuse was that he's simply a thug who was up for a bit of mindless violence.

I can't understand why anyone would be upset about a candid snap being taken of them? I'd imagine most would find it flattering that a tog had found them interesting enough to photograph? If we're talking about someone following a person around repeatedly taking pictures without permission, then it's a different story, but a one off snap? Shouldn't be a problem, unless your conscience is giving you grief, I would have thought!

At least if someone gets attacked during photo taking they will know who it is because they will ahve a r=full resolution photo of them lol!!!

in england yes go elsewhere such as new york its a different story.:bang: Its a real shame cause street photography is my fave type of photography ive not yet darred to go with street candids yet as I won't exactly be sniping with a 50mm :) only took buskers and so on.:suspect:

Oh I don't know, I could simply have made some broad, sweeping statement about you all eating your pet whippets, or something. Oddly enough though, I don't think you ALL do, maybe Ashers is an exception, any more than "all" Londoners are unfriendly! :D

It's not just London, but people in big cities do tend to have that "keep head down, ignore the crazy people, just got to make it through my commute..." attitude that doesn't appear too friendly when you're on the street :)

Yes, I know what you mean. Having said that, the most unfriendly place we've ever encountered is a little place called Rothesay on the Isle of Bute. Lovely Island, sweet looking little town from the ferry, then you arrive, and start counting down the hours 'til you can leave again! :lol:

Oh i got some looks of avoidance a few years back when stopping with friends and going to a rocky horror anniversary stage show,
Yes we were all made up including our wives but having had a horrific road accident in my youth i have a scar going a third of the way round my head and shaved head tends to make it stand out, i loved the train driver on the underground with his 2 foot pink Mohican.:thumbs:
 
In my yoof, my mates and I used to to down to London every year or so to concerts, we used to make a sport of getting commuters talking on the tube, we had some good times doing that though it wasn't always easy :)
 
ive never eaten whippet. ostrich , but not whippet.
londoners are lovely, but i couldnt eat a full one.
its not just down south in the smoke where the head down mentality exists.
try starting a conversation with someone in nottingham city centre.:cuckoo:
and no, violence isnt acceptable , by anyone.

While I enjoy candids you can generally get a feel for who doesn't mind their picture being taken. If you can't tell, you just have to ask. Abroad people tend to be more relaxed about it, while in this country, it's probably safer to do it during an event where people perhaps expect cameras to be around.

That shot looked a bit intrusive and I can imagine the scene that when approached the photographer maybe didn't have the personable skills to get him/herself out of the situation, spouted something along the lines that there is no law against it, and got a slap for their troubles.

I wouldn't bother, we're so used to the usual sob story of how you've got to get back to Bristol that afternoon and you need £3.14 for train far and you're so desperate you're willing to give us 'your' mobile phone...

i always found that if you go to places were lots of tourists go people do tend to get used to see people with cameras places like York, Chester, and many others

Anyway, this story is quite sad, but its a risk you take - there are plenty of reasons people don't want to have their photos taken - not many of them probably "good" but none the less...

I just wanted to quote the last bit you said there because I totally agree with it. Regardless of what is right and wrong, if you impose your will on someone by taking a picture when they don't want to have their picture taken there is going to be an element of risk so as a photographer you should respect that. Take a shot, but understand the risk involved.

It's certainly immoral to hit someone, but its also immoral to take photo's of people that don't like it. Some people really don't like it and phobias can cause people to do all sorts. You should see how I react when a spider enters the room :bonk:

:lol: It's quite an odd place. The worst part is if you run low of fuel - almost impossible to find the petrol station..well...shed with a pump. I have the unpleasant task of having to visit there every so often :(

I Moved from Northants to Cheshire in 1990, in 17 years I can honestly say i've never seen a whippet:wave:
 
I moved from Nth Cheshire to London 3 years ago, and frankly I dont get the north south thing at all. I have always found londoners to be friendly and co-operative, albeit generally in more of a hurry than oop north! Still, the guy on the tube was something of an idiot as already pointed out, the victim had identification there in his hand :nuts:
