I am giving a presentation to my local camera club about Street Photography, I am seeking views about the ethics of taking photographs of homeless people, beggars etc.

Is anyone aware of any ethical guidelines for photographers or have a personal view of what they consider ethical or not.

All views gratefully received.

I think ethics only comes into play if you're looking to exploit the images for commercial gain. If it's for your own personal use then homeless people are no different to anyone else when it comes to having their picture taken.

Indeed, if people are in a public space then you can shoot them to your hearts content. If I was shooting someone specifically because they were homeless or obviously going without, then a contribution would be the very least I could do in return.

Nothing wrong with shooting homeless people, as long as you do it with respect for what dignity they have left.

Many years ago I saw a tramp who'd built a fire on waste land in freezing weather, and he was sitting there smoke blackened by the fire, surrounded by a group of about 6 togs all walking around him, pushing cameras in his face, with no words being exchanged. I got the impression they were probably from a camera club shooting an assignment The guy looked decidedly unhappy and uncomfortable, but said nothing.

In the end they all went on their way without even offering the guy the price of a meal or hot drink.

talk to the person and spend time getting story of the person, this reflects in the passion that you present in your picture.

the old saying there by the grace of God, find the story and this should reflect in your images.

find that is you talk to homeless all they want is respect and curtosey. many a time i have walked away refreshed and more the wiser for some gem of wisdom from them.

a very worthwhile excercise dont take camera sit with them and talk, also provide meal if not happy providing money.

dont just shove a camera up thier nose as i know one that would shove it up your ar££ if you did nt ask
