Anyone any thoughts on starting a 'Street Photography' section in one of the forums for us to send our street photos to?

Street photography doesn't always have people in.

I suspect you're right that individual photos might indeed fit into an existing catagory, but I see 'Street Photography' as a genre on its own. To put all the photos in to different catagories would be a little like splitting the work of Chambre Hardman up into different calleries.

Can we have a field photography, motorway photography and inside big building photography sections too please?

somebody else asked about this lately. I think at the time the consensus was that most would fit into people or landscape, albeit they're urban landscapes. I'll raise it again though :)

And Mr Hardman would have had to put some of his into Animals and Wildlife along with everyone else :p

Ah, motorway photography. Good idea. Let me go and get my anorak out of the
shed. :-) Although I still think a section of Street Photography would be a good one. I really do think it's a whole ball game on its own. Take a look at www.in-public.com and you might get an idea of what I mean.

I dont need to check that link, Street absolutely is a genre of its own, but so is product, architecture and still life, all of which can be slotted it to other titles.
I still think "general" is the fly in the ointment.

Street Photography gives a photo context whether its of people, traffic, street furniture of dogs and cats and there are some photos of animals that would fit better in to a Street catagory than animal catagory. It's all depends on what the photographer was after when he took the shot.

Is there a sort of 'industry standard' for catagories of photos I wonder. You saying Product, architecture and still life has made me think. I might have a little brows on the old 'tinternet to see what's out there.

Street photography is a fascinating subject in it's own right and all that have tried it will know it can be challenging.
To have it as a separate forum section seems a good idea.

Boo :)

We don't create seperate forums specifically to have somewhere for that particular genre...per se.

We only create specific forums when that subject is getting too big for the General Photo Sharing forum, and as it stands I don't think there's an overrunning of street / urban photography to require us to split it off yet.

It's under discussion amongst the staff though :)

OK. :-)

Don't think theres an industry standard, the titles really need to cater for the work that is posted, theres no point in having any empty catagories.
Product and architecture require fairly differing and specific skills, still life as a catagory is a bit of a carry over from the drawing tool arts, it shares some skills with product, and vice versa.
The Mods do a great job here, altering thread titles to suit the postings, but as it grows there will be new members bringing these specific skills.
In the begining, we all have a go at everything, its only natural, but if I had any advice to give anyone who wanted to be good, it would be to choose one genre of photography and be the best you can be at that, be brilliant at product or portraiture or whatever, this damn photo thing is just too big to be great at everything.
Product & still life is my thing, I gotta admit, its a bit of a catagory coin flipper, but you can't have everything, the list would be a hundred yards long:)
