Hi all,

after having some issues with my previous application, Flickr ReLinker, I have produced another, Stream Pickr.

This app is still in the beta stage and I need some input, please.

The app basically displays the public images from your Flickr account along with their size, HTML and BBcode info.

Only Windows OS I'm afraid.

Download available from here.

Kind regards..,

MT ;)

A little bit more tweaking here and there and finally v2 of my Stream Pickr app is now available.

Stream Pickr Screenshot

Posted using Stream Pickr.

You just need to create your own free Flickr API Key, have your Flickr username to hand and an active Internet connection.

Works on Windows OS XP, Vista, 7 and above.

Regards..,

MT ;)

Very neat, still looking for beta testers?

Are you able to upload to flickr via the app too? (if not, is this something planned for hte future?)

Always looking for testers, find a problem, give us a shout. ;)

Uploading is a possibility for the next incarnation along with search facility.

Cheers..,

One other thing is that at the moment through the Flickr API the standard Medium image is 500px on the longest side.

They have introduced a new parameter 'z' which takes the Medium size to 640px on the longest side.

This is available to all new uploads via your actual Flickr Photostream but as yet not released as part of the API.

See here.

When it is released Stream Pickr will automatically find it and give you the extra option.

Ok, had a little play:

My system: Vista Ultimate SP2, HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop

1: First-run dialogue 'ok' and 'cancel' buttons are blank, also the message text displays a only two lines and scroll bars (you have to scroll to read the message)

2: Correction, all popup dialogue boxes/warning boxes have blank buttons & 2-lines+scroll

3: Main Interface, the 'get it' buttons are blank until you've scrolled them out of view and back.

4: .. and when you mouse over them they go blank again...

5: if I click 'get it' for one image size, clicking any other 'get it' button for that image does nothing.

6: I can't drag or resize the Pickr window

That's about all for now :p

That's an incredibly useful little app you've got there, and I'll be using it a lot methinks!

Oh and feature requests:

1: Changing the number of images to display at once, maybe having it vertically scroll.

2: Some kid of search?

Points 1-4 I will look into.

Point 5, the actual text within the Output box should have changed when a different 'Get it!' button from the same image is pressed, it may just look like it hasn't.
I wonder if you could click one button then copy & paste the output into notepad, then immediately click another button on the same image and copy and paste that output into the same notepad window and compare. They may look very similar but you should notice that the width & height on the HTML version and the image suffix is different.

Point 6 is a design feature, there is no drag or resize.

As per the feature requests, these are things that I am thinking of implementing.

how do I set the api key?

how do I set the api key?

Hi,

firstly go to Flickr Create API Key

Then

  • Apply for a non-commercial key.
  • In the 'What's the name of your app?' box just type - "Stream Pickr User" (without quotes).
  • In the 'What are you building?' box just type - "I my own API Key to be able to use Stream Pickr" (again, without quotes).
  • Tick the 2 check boxes and hit submit.
  • You will then be given you personal API Key (32 digit) and a Secret Key (16 digit not required for Stream Pickr).
  • There is no need to do anymore within your Flickr account.
  • Copy your API Key exactly and do not divulge it to anyone.

I did place a README file in the installation setup, please tell me if this did not show up.

Kind regards..,

MT ;)

Is this flickr API key something different to the way iPhone and other Flickr addon sites work? Those just ask you to confirm you trust the software and you're good to go.

Personally I don't mind jumping through a couple of hoops for a neat application, but for the general public, it might be a bit too technical (or just too much hassle) for some. People online are lazy by nature. :)

Who looks at readme's these days?

I use http://quickrpickr.com/ generally... no need of any of this pfaffing...

You have to make it easier to install....

Other products probably use the commercial version of the API key, which they have to pay for and thus need to either charge directly for their software or recoup cost via advertizing.
The commercial key does not have the limitations on the amount of calls per second that can be made.

My v1 was using my own personal API key but this was getting very close to the limit set by Flickr as the number of users increased, hence v2 requires the user to have their own key.

In my opinion it takes no longer to get your own key and enter it into Stream Pickr (once only), than having to sign in via some login details.

The people who DO NOT look at readmes are the ones who need help, quite obviously, that's what they are designed for.

Obviously, but like you said, the people who do not look at them are the ones that need them.. but they don't look at them. :)

I haven't complained that it was difficult, just letting you know that if you want your app to appeal to the general masses, you have to make it as idiot proof as possible. :)

I was not replying to your post about concerning the README. It was in reply to mipevo6.

Crossed wires I think somewhere. ;)

I totally agree about making things 'idiot' proof but having said that, the app is designed for use really by people who already know their way around a website and how to fill in boxes, just like is needed almost everytime you have to signin.

Again, it is only for Flickr users, which guaranteed aren't all photographers but most I would say have a technical bent.

Then how to make it more 'idiot' proof than having full instructions, does everyone need to have their hand held these days? I would hate to think so.

Kind regards..,

MT ;)

I never read my phone's instructions once, any of the phones I've ever owned, never needed to. :)

Hi,

if you are still interested I have made a patch that should in all theory correct these 4 points.

Available here as Stream Pickr v20-v21

Please let me know if it corrects the bugs at your end.

Hi,

a couple of other questions if you don't mind answering for me?

What is the Monitor size of your laptop?

What is the screen resolution set at?

Kind regards..,

MT ;)

17" laptop screen at 16:10, 1440x900px

The patch fixes the button issues (1-4), good show

On comparing the links generated, it does change the links when clicking for different sizes, I was just being an unobservant oik

Question back at you: Why have you chosen to have no drag or resize on the program window, it's driving me insane having it sitting parked in the middle of my screen. Normally I'd drag it to one side and the destination for the generated code on the other.. it just seems rather restrictive to purposefully kill the main benefit of window-based programs. Obviously, you've your reasons, I'm just curious :p

EDIT: Another bug for the list:

Settings window, I'm not getting any text next to the radio buttons for "Tool bar Tips" or "Image Title Popup"

Feature request:

In the settings window I'd like to see my current Flickr username and API key pre-populated in the 'Change Username' and 'Change API key' inputs, either that or displayed around there so I can check my current ones.

Hi, I am glad the patch done the job, it was a resolution issue that I had over looked.
As for the screen position, I assumed that because of the relatively long size of it that on the majority of monitors it could not really be dragged anywhere that would make it be out of the way.
I also made so that other windows open above it and the output code is copied to the clipboard to aid entry on a forum etc.
If however you feel quite strongly about this I can create another patch to resolve this.
I am a bit tied up for the next day or so but I will get to it and let you know.
Everything in life is a learning curve.
I really appreciate your feedback.

Kind regards

MT ;)

Awesome.

Kjevans, it's still a damm fine job you've done with that app. I can see myself using it a fair old bit :)

I noticed it's tendancy to get lost under other windows, but I'm a clicker not an alt-tabber so I like to be able to arrange them myself. O'course resizing the window might be a new kind of pain for you but being able to dragging it around the screen is an absolute must for me, and possibly even the majority of it's intended users.

Regardless, keep at it, it's a great little tool :)

I'm at work atm, but I'll check it the second I get my laptop to an internet conection K
