Yes
I had quite convinced myself that this was a song about a woman who controlled a relationship. So convinced that i explained my theory to my daughter and her friends.
Sadly I discovered the correct meaning on the lyrics...... Its all about heroin and addiction! Did I feel a prat or what, only worsened that my wife works in Probation, solely with drug and alcohol abusers. She knew all the time!!
Ah well!

Hugh Cornwell wrote quite a few songs about his various experiences in life.

The best bit was when it was named as Record of the Week on Radio 2, Terry Wogan playing a song about Heroin Addiction

:D My mate laughed at me when I found out about the Beatles song..Lucy in the sky with Diamonds..........:( WELL, I didn't know...

Well, if you're referring to it being about LSD, it isn't.

Lennon said that it was a painting that his son Julian brought home from school and when he asked him what it was he said 'It's Lucy in the sky with diamonds'.

I've heard the interview where he actually says this, so it's not speculation.

Yup, I've heard the same interview.
Another urban legend unfolded.

I wonder if the Ad companies knew the truth about Golden Brown before using it on TV adverts.

I saw Clinton stating that he had "never had sexual relations with that woman"... Just because you've read or seen something, even from the horses mouth, doesn't mean it's true.

That's the same dear old BBC who remade Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" into their jingle. When junkie Lou wrote it, he wasn't saying he was so glad he'd spent his perfect day with a TV station ....

It took me a few years to find out about Golden Brown as well, if you don't live in that world you don't have a reference.

I remember watching squeaky clean Blue Peter one day they had Musical Youth on, the presenter pointedly saying "a Dutchy Pan is a kind of cooking pot isn't it" to one of the band members who replied "er yeah".

It goes like this..

Golden brown texture like sun
Lays me down with my mind she runs
Throughout the night
No need to fight
Never a frown with golden brown

Every time just like the last
On her ship tied to the mast
To distant lands
Takes both my hands
Never a frown with golden brown

Golden brown finer temptress
Through the ages she's heading

West
From far away
Stays for a day
Never a frown with golden brown

Never a frown
With golden brown
Never a frown
With golden brown

Golden brown..This struck me as an attractive women, [I can still smell Ambre Solaire on girls at the beach from my youth!!], Lays me down with my mind she runs... he is transfixed by her, on her ship tied to the mast. [no not bondage] she controls him. Never a frown a with Golden Brown... she is no problem to him, she takes him for a sexual ride which he is willing to go along with. Stays for a day, implies she dips in and out of the relationship. Takes him and then leaves him. Golden brown finer temptress..... Ah the innuendo and sexual promise....!!

Well I was convinced but it wasn't quite the version I gave my daughter. But I still thinks its a good alternative!

Cheers,

Dunc

This is a great site for discussions on lyrics. Oh, and despite what Lennon says I'd eat my hat if Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds wasn't written about LSD. Nobody's that naive, especially Lennon.

Gordon Brown, texture like scum................

As I understand it and it was discussed quite some time
back on a radio 2 programme ( might have been Steve Wright's)
that it was written when the guys were on an LSD trip ( or shortly after)
and was about their experiences

i tbh dont see the issue with lyrics and the meaning behind them, either a song sounds good (and you like it) or you like it because the lyrics mean something to you

Interesting. And his reason for denying it would be.......?????

And when you say 'naive' I'm not sure what you mean. I'm a musician and I've written lots of songs. I've never once looked at the initial letters in the titles to see if they could be interpreted as something else. I don't know why it would occur to anyone to do that.

Interesting but imho if you like a song it doesn't really matter whether there's "hidden" meaning in the lyrics or not.

It's what the song means to you that's most important.

When we were in school we had one of those poetry readings and q&a sessions with the poet afterwards (I can't remember who it was)
One of the questions he was asked was "do you get offended by people reading things into your poetry?"
His answer "No. I don't care what people read into my work, it's what they read out of it and how it affects them that's important."

Corny I know . . . but probably relevant to this thread.

Some more heroin-inspired lyrics... as used to marvellous effect in Trainspotting

Just a perfect day,
Drink Sangria in the park,
And then later, when it gets dark,
We go home.
Just a perfect day,
Feed animals in the zoo
Then later, a movie, too,
And then home.

Oh it's such a perfect day,
I'm glad I spent it with you.
Oh such a perfect day,
You just keep me hanging on,
You just keep me hanging on.

Just a perfect day,
Problems all left alone,
Weekenders on our own.
It's such fun.
Just a perfect day,
You made me forget myself.
I thought I was someone else,
Someone good.

Oh it's such a perfect day,
I'm glad I spent it with you.
Oh such a perfect day,
You just keep me hanging on,
You just keep me hanging on.

You're going to reap just what you sow...

This is a great one from 2 all "American" squeaky clean Jewish boys

Never quite sure about it ( especially the last 2 verses)
but I think that it might be "innocent" what say you?

Someone told me
Its all happening at the zoo.

I do believe it,
I do believe its true.

Its a light and tumble journey
From the east side to the park;
Just a fine and fancy ramble
To the zoo.

But you can take the crosstown bus
If its raining or its cold,
And the animals will love it
If you do.

Somethin tells me
Its all happening at the zoo.

The monkeys stand for honesty,
Giraffes are insincere,
And the elephants are kindly but
Theyre dumb.
Orangutans are skeptical
Of changes in their cages,
And the zookeeper is very fond of rum.

Zebras are reactionaries,
Antelopes are missionaries,
Pigeons plot in secrecy,
And hamsters turn on frequently.
What a gas! you gotta come and see
At the zoo.

Oh, I don't know. I've always thought that he denied it a bit too strongly. You have to admit that the lyrics to seem a bit like an acid-inspired trip (not that I've any first-hand experience you understand :))

It would be a hell of a coincidence to write a song about beans called Freddie's Anal Raspberry Trumpets, no?

I WANT A WRITING CREDIT ON THE ALBUM!

"Rattus Norvegicus" was an awesome album..........

I misread the title...I was hoping we were discussing strangling Gordon Brown :D

OK ....who was the person behind Muffin the Mule, and what were they thinking at the time?

Muffin the Mule was the first great star of children's television in Britain. He made his television debut as a puppet in October 1946 with Annette Mills. No one is really sure about his origins but it seems he had been on the workshop shelves of the Hogarth Puppet Circus before being discovered by Mills to accompany her on the TV programme For the Children. He became such a popular feature on For the Children that in 1952 the programme was name after him and became Muffin the Mule. Despite Mills' death in 1955, Muffin continued alongside co-producer Ann Hogarth until 1957. In 2006 Muffin returned to the BBC for his 60th birthday. This time round Muffin is an animated character who lives on a farm and helps other animals get out of trouble.

All together now boys and girls

Here comes Muffin, Muffin the Mule.
Dear old Muffin, playing the fool.
Here comes Muffin, everybody sing.
Here comes Muffin the Mule.

I think that you could have hit the nail on the head with the similarities of the controlling nature of both women and smack....

Both cost lots of money, sometimes the happiness only lasts minutes... and you find yourself going back for more!!

Whenever Golden Brown gets played on the radio my wife sticks her fingers in her ears and runs out of the room, when It was 1st released she worked as a lifeguard, Golden Brown was on the jukebox and every 45 minute session somebody put it on, 10 times a day, 6 days a week for weeks and weeks, so when we've had a row guess what comes out of the CD collection :D
