Strange Ring on Sensor

I was out shooting my dog few weeks back and came across a strange half ring on my images (on the left) I had a quick look at the sensor and couldnt see anything do put it down to the lens (18-300) I have now shot with my 24-70 and it is there again so it must be the sensor but I have no idea what it is as i cant see anything on there. Anyone come across it before or know what it might be?

Does the mirror appear to look OK ?
 
no, only does it when the sky is in the shot or if i have a big area to photograph, doesnt do it on anything closer than say 10 metres
 
You're not using Picassa by any chance?

The beach shot was october last year camers done over 30, 000 images since.

How does something with the sensor indicate the shutter is on its way out?

I can't think quickly how that exactly may be... but - can you see any correlation against shutter speed. If 1/8000s gets worse - time for service

Try shooting without a lens and have a look what is happening inside (DO NOT touch anything!)

It takes a picture as normal, can't see it doing anything differently.

Colouration seems pretty much the same from 1/60 to 1/2000
 
I'd put some insulation tape around the lens/mount junction to see if that fixes it.

It looks like light leak to me.
have you dropped it recently?
 
Nope never been dropped (which is unusual for me)

it does the same thing without the lens attached

I have just done another test

F2.8 on all

ISO 100 - 1/500 nothing

ISO 200 - 1/1000 Nothing

Iso 400 - 1/2000 - Very very faint

Iso 800 - 1/4000 - noticeable

Iso 1600 - 1/8000 - Very noticeable

I have done the above test with black tape wrapped around the lens mount

What if you don't increase the shutter speed when you increase the ISO - in other words make it more sensitive to light.

Just a thought - have you tried masking the viewfinder ?

If i dont increase the shutter speed when i increase the ISO it will underexpose?

It's not the view finder
 
It's lens flare, pure and simple.
All lenses are subject to flare, which is light bouncing around inside the lens. It's far more likely/more obvious when the subject includes something bright - the sky in your case, but the sun or some other light source is an even bigger problem, when it's a wide angle lens, when it's a zoom lens, when you're using a large aperture and when your lens isn't fitted with an effective lens hood.

This isn't lens flare!

I can create this without a lens attached sitting in my shed
 
I was going to ask if you had a filter fitted, but I won't now.

You've got me stumped with this.

It would seem that it is an artifact produced by the sensor, more noticeable with increasing iso. Weird.

A small tear or hole in the shutter blade will let light in during the travel of the shutter blade as it opens.

It's NOT lens flare, pure and simple.

If the OP removes the lens and carefully raises the mirror by using his fingertip under the leading edge (no, it will not damage anything) or use mirror lock-up so he can see the shutter blades, he will probably notice a small tear or hole, most likely on the edge, of one of the blades.

Thanks Phil, is this a problem I should be concerned about, bearing in mind 99% of the time i am shooting with flash so my shutter is never above 1/250 so 99% of the time i never see this in my images.

What i mean is, if i continue to use the camera will anything happen?

The good news is, that it may not get any worse.
However, I doubt that very much.
The bad news is it won't get better, is likely to get worse and eventually the shutter will go out to lunch and not invite you and this will happen...

Sorry it wasn't better news.

I've done three shutters in various bodies and my 10D did exactly that before it finally pooed itself.
 
Just had a look at my blades and can't see anything, so hopefully it has a little more life in it, well enough to get me through the next week would be nice
 
As Phil says, I'd bet on a shutter fault. Seen it before with that characteristic half-moon shape, which if you look at a super-slo-mo of a focal plane shutter in action, fits perfectly. It's leaking light around the hinge/pivots, intermittently, and will likely get worse :(
