I'm not sure if this is a fault or something I'm doing wrong but occasionally while using the studio lights one or both will shutdown, ie, power off completely and won't turn back on via the switch. They have to be removed from the power cord to power back up again.

Can't think of any reason why they would do this other than they have a fault of some description?

Or is there something that makes them do this to prevent overheating maybe?

PS. They are less than a week old. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

oh great
im waiting on the set of 4 to turn up
hope i dont get the same problem
if i do ill let you know
once i get them

What worries me is a friend bought the same set and before ours arrived he had the same issue with one of his lights. Fingers crossed it's something that can be fixed without having to return them, if it is a fault of course.

It sounds like the over-heat protection cutting in. That can happen in normal use if the modelling lamp is full on, enclosed in a softbox or snoot etc, or the head is tilted down.

Most of the heat comes from the modelling lamp, not the flash, so turn it down or preferably off after you've finished setting up. Usually you only need modelling light from the main key-light to see what you're doing while actually shooting.

Thanks. Strangely the modelling lights weren't on. I don't really have a need for them so have just been using the flash.

Unlikely to be over-heat protection then, unless the trip level has been set too low.

Sorry, but this isn't something that anyone else has mentioned so I have no idea. I'll take it up with the factory to get a defnitive answer.

As now discussed with Paul, this is a complete mystery to both the factory and us. We are picking up Paul's head and sending it straight to the factory, they will then identify and resolve the problem. We have a large batch going through the factory right now and obviously will get this problem identified and dealt with before the batch is finished in about 10 days time.

Thanks for the swift response Garry, following on from our telephone conversation and just for your info, the 2nd light did the same thing about 10mins later :-(

An update of sorts, we got the flash head back but couldn't replicate the fault. This introduces the possibility of a local problem (spikes in the electricity supply causing the protection system in the flash head to cut off). But that's just speculation.

It has now gone back to the factory by air courier, and their chief engineer has seen a video of it. Until he gets to take it apart, it's as much a mystery to him as it is to us.

Thanks for the replacement Garry, not had the problem since, so hopefully that's that one sorted. Will be talking both lights to a friends house to be checked on his power supply, although I've never had any issues with electrical items in the past so it's unlikely but I will check it anyway to rule it out.

Great service from you guys, can't ask for much more than that :-)
