So, I'm over in California at the moment, following the trail of Ansel Adams. Whilst sat in the hotel bar having a beer we exchanged small talk over walks, where there was water, with a fellow guest who turns out to be related, (great grand nephew) of Gustaf Holst.

"Gustav Holst? The Composer, the Planets?"
"Oh have you heard of him? Not many americans have..."

Then in the pool we met one of the ex military nurses who delivered my first son.

So what strange meetings have you had?

I once met my mother in a mirror in a cafe. I thought that was pretty strange. Mind you I was on LSD at the time:cool:

Not exactly a meeting, but many years ago I drove from London to S. Wales, and found myself driving over a mountain in the pitch black. Very dangerous road, and to cut a long story short I pulled into a passing point and stopped for the night,#
In the morning I saw another car that had done exactly the same thing, and when the driver got out I found that he lived just a few yards from me.
To add to the coincidence, neither of us had ever been on that mountain before.

When in Palmanova on holiday my wife fell ill. We ended up being rushed to a private hospital in Palma , where we spent another week.

There were two nurses who tended to us over the week, and as you do, we got talking. One nurse was English, one was Dutch.
The English one mentions my West Country accent and asked if I was bristolian. I explained I am not, although my family is, and both my parents are from fishponds. The nurse looked shocked and said she was from fishponds, Vassel Road, did I know it?
Err yes, my mum grew up on Vassel Road and her parents lived there til they died in the early 2000s.

It didn't end there, I explained I was born in Bath, moved to Dorset, but then settled in Gloucester. The nurse looked shocked again..
I used to live in Gloucester she explained, St James road...

Well I'll be a badger,I grew up there as my parents lived on the next road down from there!

Next day, the Dutch nurse is on shift and again, making small talk I mention my brothers wife is Dutch. She asks where she was from and I try to pronounce it, only for her to finish my word and explain she was born there.. A tiny little town in Holland.

My gaster was well and truly flabbered.

Whilst living in SF in the early 90s I was in a bar in Berkeley and was tapped on the shoulder by a girl I'd gone to infant school with.
Her family emigrated to South Africa when she was eight and I'd not heard a peep since.
Turned out we were both there on a years uni swap at UC Berkeley. Different degree subjects, but what are the odds?
Still in touch now :-)

My wife was asked to be godmother to my friends' daughter. When we were round at their house before the christening, my friend said "Come and meet the other godmother. You probably know her, because she's Welsh too!" It turned out that they used to take the same bus to school together (though they weren't in the same class). And there was absolutely no common denominator regarding how they came to be there: one was the wife of a college friend of the baby's father, and the other was a former work colleague of the baby's mother.

Only today whilst walking in a town I've not been to before, I met several people who I had never met before.

Back in the early 80's, I went on holiday to Ilfracombe, stayed in a B&B above a restaurant. Turned out the owner came from the town next to where I live. Also when I was at school, late 70's we had a school rugby trip to Wales. Each player staying with a family from the opposing school / team we went to play. Turns out the mother of the lad whose house I stayed at grew up about 2 miles from where I lived and had gone to the same school.

I was working in a casino aboard a cruise ship sailing out of Miami around the Caribbean when I got talking to an English couple at the blackjack table. It turned out they lived a few doors down from where I lived in Worthing when not abroad.

On the same ship I discovered, on my first night, that I was once again working with a girl I had worked with in a Brighton casino a few years previously. A few years later, I went on to work in South Africa and was given an apartment in a staff village complex. I was surprised to find I was neighbours with the same girl. She must have thought I was stalking her around the world.

I've been on a few TP meets......very strange lot ;)

:D

I once conveyed Mario Testino from Cheltenham to London and didn't know who the f*#k he was. Strange huh !!

My son went to the Lotus Factory a few years ago, he'd not been told any details other than he would be marshalling an event on their test track. Just as the event was about to start they had heavy rain and the track event was postponed, everyone was grouped together in a hospitality area. My son got talking to some bloke, he thought he recognised, but couldn't put a name to. It was only after the bloke moved on to talk to others, it suddenly dawned on my son he'd been talking to Jean Alesi.
