Hi all,
When I open "Network" on my windows 10 pc it shows that I have an "Elephone P8000" connected to my home network!
I don't know anyone who has one of these phones so how can this be?
Can it be blocked in any way?
I doesn't show up in the list of connected devices in my BT hub settings- wierd!

Ah. The Elephone in the room.

If you have a wireless router and know how to access the router settings, typically via a web browser, it might have an option to list all devices connected by wifi and Ethernet.

On many routers you have the option to block or set time limits for specific devices.

Some connected devices might be in the router itself.

in network when you go to its properties does it have an IP or just a Mac address?

if it just have a mac address then from what i've read in the past it is essentially a nearby wireless device performing a handshake on your network. it is not necessarily trying to connect (or maybe it is) it could just be detecting your network to display it in the devices list of available connections. this is enough to make it show temporarily in the windows network. it is not necessarily a connected device or security issue. as long as it hasn't gotten an IP.

another quick google suggests stopping the "Windows Connect Now - Config Registrar" service. this removed the Sony device from my list (presumably the neighbours).

*you'll need to disable and stop as it will just restart itself

Thanks Neil, yes it does just show a mac address and nothing else- so I guess its doing no harm !

Your router might see it, but potentially identify it with a different name?
I don't think Windows should see it, if it's actually not connected to your network (N.B. it's just scanning for access points and found your wireless network)
Unless you have your Windows PC acting as an Access Point.

Either that, or it's some sort of Bluetooth voodoo.

I'd download zenmap and scan your network for attached devices.

some body might have a secret phone. you may never know. (my nephew was hiding one for more than 4 months) ;)
