Storyville BBC4 24th May

I think it would be good for all photographers to watch what happens at the sharp end of the hobby or profession, that we all love so much.

I'll certainly be watching this, the Storyville documentaries are always great :)

Did anyone watch this and what were your thoughts?

I missed the first half hour but thought it was an very good in-sight into a War Photographer and do think that he does suffer from PTSD and is very frustrated with the modern approach of the Military that he's not welcome when it's properly "kicking off"! Or, that is how I read it when he was in Afghanistan!

Carl.

A strange documentary, especially the way it was presented.

It was nice to see that he was still alive as he went very naive, also interesting to see his pictures that no-one wanted at the time.

I thought it was very interesting.

At one point he is in Chechnya, and a shell has just landed, the video cuts to him and he is holding the hand of a old guy who has just had his leg blown off. He comforts him for a few more seconds and then backs away, as do the other camera men. No really sure how I felt about it. Seemed like he was fighting has natural response to help the guy.

Or the guy died. That was my impression

I found it very interesting, especially Robert King he really would do anything to persue a career in photojournalism even if his life was on the line, that's a real passion for photography. I also like how he turned his life around, got married and had a child.

I did find it interestling over all, but I did get the impression that it was I half finished documentary from 1997 with the Iraq parts edited in towards the end. I gathered that the hunting scenes were filmed in 1997 - it would have benefited from a present day interview with him to see if anything had changed.

The English freelance cameraman at the beginning in Sarajevo with the 'pink & purple dots ora (sp?)' was an interesting character too.

Thread revival!

Just watched this and found it extremely interesting. Loved the way it showed him from the start of his career right until he is now. Funny and very brutal.

Sorry to drag this thread up but only just got round to watching this the other day. Amazing documentary of a very lucky to be alive but talented photographer. Loved this and found another film called "War Photographer" which is supposed to be great. Can anyone recommend anything else?

I'd love to go into photojournalism and plan to start shooting some events soon (need to work on my street photography first) but maybe this is a little bit too dangerous for my liking lol.
